But what I was hoping to see come up has not come up: I think that there is something wrong in the BOINCStats numbers. They item of total over all WCG crunchers shown prior to the re-build of BOINCStats was somehwre just north of 2 million. Now, under 400,000? Clearly you're mixing-up Users and Devices, since according to WCG's own pages it's 600k users but 2.1 M devices. As for BoincStats having fewer users, this is because the latter only shows users with BOINC-credit, they're not counting all the users that never managed to return a single valid result and neither all the users only using the old UD-agent. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. You can bet the economy has some to do with it. Lets face it, the worlds economy is sinking faster than the titanic. The BS being broadcasted is just a smoke screen. Just getting harder to make ends meet so projects like crunching will be one of the first things to go. As electricity goes up in price, more and more folks will pull the plug. I don't think advertising would do much good. More and more folks are moving over to tablets and smart phones. Its surprising to me how many folks I come across still don't know much about computers. Try to mention crunching and I get the weirest look like I am talking greek to them. Word of mouth from folks who do this is probably best as we can explain it better than some advertising. Sure, a bumper sticker might attract an inquiry but probably not much. I just keep mentioning it as much as I can with hopes of attracting more voluntees. I have been to TWO local pc stores lately, one a mom and pop one and one MicroCenter, a company with MULTIPLE stores Nationwide, and bought new pc's parts at both. BOTH times the tech asked me what I was going to use the parts for, I told them for Distributed Computing, they BOTH gave me blank stares!! I told them you know 'looking for ET as in Seti', which I stopped long ago. NEITHER tech had a clue what I was talking about!! I even went to a store that is essentially a pawn shop for pc stuff and even had to educate the tech there about 'shaders' on AMD gpu's!! The total lack of people having even a rudimentary clue about DC is amazing to me!! I often walk into pc stores and am the smartest guy there when it comes to gpu's and how mismatched parts CAN IN FACT work together!! I actually had one tech tell me that an IDE and Sata drive CANNOT be in the same machine AND have the ide drive be the C:\ drive!!! I told I have that in SEVERAL machines and it works just fine! I actually took one in just to show him, he was AMAZED and he was NOT a computer newbie!! Just a note...I use the sata drive for on machine backups so it was added later on. ![]() ![]() |

I read this and smiled and how right you are. My fascination has always been on the hardware end. What is new, hoiw much better is it that what is current, how much more electrically efficient is it? Where I live in New Hampshire app 5 miles from me is the local "big" privately owned PC store. maybe 2500 sq ft in size, 3 person operation. I needed some small parts one weekend and went down there to get them. I know the people there and mentioned that I'd just got a pair of 12 core AMD Magnycours cpu's. The guy essentially called me a liar so I went home, grabbed them and brought them back to show him. The look on his face was worth the trip. They forget that it's not where you live in todays world but what your interests are and who you know. They also asked 'What do you use those for and when I said DC work their faces were blank so I explained and gave my little spiel of 'I can't think of a better way for the average person to do something positive for our childrens generation than to do research into finding cures for AIDS,Cancer, etc" I know, a waste of breath but you have to try. I watched my Granmother die of cancer when I was 13 back in 1965 and have never forgotten the hell I saw her go through. If I can help just one person from going thru that then all the expense and work involved is nothing compared to the benefit. Sorry for the rant but this just grabbed me. ![]() |

Have very similar experience recently. I want to buy a rig which I would dedicate to WCG. When I called to 2 (probably) biggest shops and briefed them for "PC for Distributed computing", none of them had a clue what I am talking about. Asked me to send them an e-mail with specification (holy shrub - if I have an idea what I would like to buy, would I bother them with phone calls?) and when I put some BS on the paper and sent them "my expectations", one of them linked me to their 2000 USD generic configurations (with e.g. 2 TB HDD ) and from the second shop I received 2 promises that "they will send me something tomorrow"... Looking for other solutions ![]() ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Shrubbing@Home since January 5 2006 ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by branjo at Oct 9, 2012 1:44:20 PM] |

Looking for other solutions ![]() Come over to the XtremeSystems forum, join and we'll gladly help you out with any choices based upon what you want to spend. Yea, it will cost you $1.00 to join but we do that to keep away the spammers and it works. The guys there "know their stuff" and love to help out new people. Oh, Don't buy, build it yourself and it isn't rocket science. Easy once you understand how the parts connect and basics of cooling. To put it in perspective what a store will sell you for $2000.00 can be built for 1/2 that with better quality parts in an afternoon on your kitchen table and your savings will offset the electrical cost for the next 2 years easily. ![]() |

Thanks Movieman, will join it Cheers and NI! Just watch out for the call from movieman. Your wallet will never be the same. . Mine is still recovering after two dual hex crunchers. But him and the good folks at xtremesystems will guide you in the right direction to the best system you can build for half of what you could ever find. Great folks over there. Like MM said, build it yourself or find someone to show you. Its not that hard. If your in Minnesota, will be glad to show you.
Crunching for humanity since 2007!
