Hi Lanscader [Aka Caniche]Hello my friend from the Riddle Thread I think my memory is deserting me but I just remembered that you made a name change last monthHow have you been I am thinking of starting up the riddle thread again when I have time to obtain a couple of hundred riddlesHello Graham. I've been doing pretty well. Going to some summer camps, tweaking my computer. I'll see if I can help you out with the riddles, if I have time. Nathan |

Wow -- Microsoft Antispyware was scanning my system this morning and, of course, the Rosetta finished a work unit during the scan. The agent reports my Overall Performance about 30 units below normal for that work unit! Oh well, the next work unit looks like it will take about 10 hours, so it won't complete against the Antispyware scan which hits at 4:30 AM local time every day.

I must preface this with the comment that I only have experience with the Intel P4 processors. I do not know for sure about the AMD Dual core processors.
----------------------------------------My experience is that my Pentium D (dual core 3.2Ghz) machine runs the agent and gets a score of only 184. My Pentium 4 3.06Ghz (single core) gets a Processor Score of 206. Presumably if the software were capable (agent and Rosetta) I could run two of them at the same time and get 184 out of each core. Sadly, this is not possible to date. And from what I understand, it is not a high priority project with the developers. If you are looking for pure WCG throughput, then a dual core is probably not for you unless you need to do very significant computational tasks along with WCG on the same machine. Hope that makes sense. A single core Pentium (or AMD processor I think) will produce more throughput...as long as you don't have other heavily-computational tasks running a good portion of the time. I hope this helps. If it doesn't, ask a specific question and I will do my best to answer it. Kind Regards Team Oh. You can check out the ratings as reported by the WCG and UD grid agent here . |

I have seen something similar. My AMD 64 3000+ only gets a score of 184 and the pentium 4 3Ghz gets 204! Maybe the code which works out the processor score is not that great at determining overall processing grunt I want to set up a VMware session running Windows XP 64 bit version to see what sort of score I get and to see if it crunches faster. |

Very interesting experiment you are proposing: Seeing if you are able to get more from the dual core processors by using the 64bit version of Windows. It does not seem reasonable to me that it would happen...but who knows till someone tries it.
----------------------------------------That would throw a kink in the stats that I keep on processor scores (in my sig below) But if it works, we will make accommodations. If you ... or anyone else runs this experiment, please let us/me know so I can accommodate it in the tables and so that everyone else can take the opportunity, if they so choose, to contribute more that way.Kind Regards. |
