Still appear to have the same problems reported for last weeks test:
----------------------------------------1. BOINC downloads non-GPU WUs regardless of the cache being full while GPU Betas are in progress. It has been suggested that this can be avoided by upgrading to 7.0.36 - if this is the case can techs please confirm. 2. Tasks hangs at 99.415% (waited until 30 mins before abort.) Currently running Vista Home Premium SP1 and 6.10.58 ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Sep 17, 2012 10:57:39 PM] |

2. Tasks hangs at 99.415% (waited until 30 mins before abort.) Try this the next time it happens before you abort them. Suspend all the HCC GPU tasks in cache and the one that is stuck at the same time. Wait 10 seconds then resume all of them at the same time. I've only had 1 get stuck and it finished after I did the above.

I'm having a lot better luck with this batch than the previous one. Most of the previous batch got stuck at 99.415% and wouldn't finish no matter what I did with suspending, resuming, restarting BOINC, even rebooting. With this batch, the first three have run through, reported and validated. They pause for a minute or so at 99.415% but then complete on their own. Hope this continues! I have 5 more.

@kateiecy: That pause @ 99.415% is so the CPU can finish the task and is normal. The time of the pause is very much hardware related.

The ones that have worked for me have paused at 99.415% for about a minute and a half, and that seemed reasonable for CPU cleanup. It's the ones that stop there for half an hour on the same computer that I figure have a problem. After my optimism with the first 3 that I got today, now the 4th one has been at 99.415% for 10 minutes. This is with BOINC 7.0.28 on Windows 7 Home Premium on an AMD A-10 5700. This is a machine that my husband and I just got a few days ago, and is my only machine with a BOINC-capable GPU and Windows. I'm excited about finally being able to participate in these WCG beta tests. My other machines with usable GPUs all run Linux. |

Kate, try the suspend all and resume all and see if it finishes.
----------------------------------------And FWIW I've been looking through the error logs on the resends I have received. 99% of the errors are from machines running a 6.10.xx version of BOINC. C'mon crunchers. It's time to update to a version 7.x.xx if you're going to run GPU tasks. I would recommend 7.0.36. It has all the latest bug fixes.

No hanging tasks but I can confirm one of my rigs pulling tasks beyond its stated cache.

@ nanoprobe Thanks for the suggestion. Sadly it didn't work for me. Suspending and then resuming had the effect of restarting the task at zero and the cycle begins again and then repeats the hang at 99.415%. Following your idea, it appears that the CPU is not kicking in to finish the task.
----------------------------------------Your latest post re upgrading Boinc to 7.0.36 echos the comments of other people so I'm going to give it a try. It just seems odd that no official comment/guidance has been forthcoming especially since 6.10.58 is the WCG approved version. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Sep 18, 2012 1:01:14 AM] |

I may have jumped the gun a bit and added a 4850 to a machine running a 5850 and a 5450. This may have added a few extra errors as I believe they tried to run on the 4850. I have removed the 4850 after seeing it is one of the cards on the bad luck list. It would have been nice to have 4 of these running on this project.

....then repeats the hang at 99.415%. Foolowing your idea, it appears that the CPU is not kicking in to finish the task.
----------------------------------------Agree - you can see this happen with process explorer. After the GPU is finished, the CPU will run up to 8-10% occupancy til the work unit is finished, and uploaded. You can watch the WU's that hang at 99.415, the CPU never regains any usage. Sometimes Suspend / Restore help, sometimes not. Edit: i7-860, HD Radeon 5770, BOINC 7.0.28 [Edit 1 times, last edit by grumpygrampy at Sep 18, 2012 1:13:24 AM] |
