There are new builds out for MAC+Linux, v 7.0.39 so expecting a Windows version too, soon, and there is need for it v.v. W8. If you get there, to W8, make sure to install under a local account [for GPU crunchers]... I've paid a price for not reading the manual before hand. Local v MS account explained here: http://www.howtogeek.com/121975/htg-explains-...al-accounts-in-windows-8/
P.S. W8 helps to reduce system watts usage [bout 5% on mine], which means less heat, now full out OEM air cooled, 48C :P |

Just FYI there was an announcement saying that BOINC 6.10 doesn't install on Windows 8, however I just did an in place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 pro and WGC is running same as it normally does. No, it does NOT run normally: .It's not even possible to install it on Windows 8. |

What's said: He did an *in-place* upgrade of W7 to W8. If 6.10.xx is already on it, it will continue to run, but installing it [clean] fails.
----------------------------------------If there was no previous BOINC and thus no previous special limited boinc user groups, one mentioned in the error message, it wont install. Then you are to fetch the special sticky post over all forums, 7.0.31 or higher for installation and to repeat the repeated: Install under local user *not* under a Microsoft [live] account! The install sequence have not changed from 6.10.58 [screenshots in Start Here FAQs]. Local user: If you want to do GPU computing also for HCC1, or Service [Protected Application Execution]: If you want BOINC always to run in background, but only CPU computing, a Windows only restriction. edit: Live with a v. For the performance conscious, always looking for optimizations, look very hard at that Windows Search indexing service. Default BOINC is installing the data_dir to C:\ProgramData and this is a place WS might love to work on. Latest tweakonometry, getting 99.85 to 99.95% efficiency with BOINC, particularly on the HCC-CPU... this is W8-64-Pro. Test release 7.0.38 [which I found this morning to have hung up, loosing 8 cores crunching for 5.5 hours] Nada found in any event/system log, just froze, the BM unable to disconnect, the TM not able to kill the core client process... orderly reboot required.
The WIFI side is still a dud, without exception, after boot, it's extremely slow [waiting ages to get a web page loaded e.g.]... only after disconnecting and reconnecting to the router do I see fair throughput [right bar, settings, WIFI connectivity app] |
