Windows 8

Just FYI there was an announcement saying that BOINC 6.10 doesn't install on Windows 8, however I just did an in place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 pro and WGC is running same as it normally does.

Re: Windows 8

Yes...that was already known. I believe it was mentioned in one or more of the Windows 8 threads that were started when first released. The reason the announcement says that is because it is assuming a clean install of Windows 8 with no prior install of BOINC. There is also another way to get it to work supposedly, but it is a real pain in the rear. Happy crunching.

Edit: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31739 Check out mikey159b's statement.

Edit2: Just another post on Windows 8 started after the above one. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,32673

Re: Windows 8

Gotcha, sorry about the repetition I did a search to check if anyone else had posted about it but nothing came up, guess I just didn't put it in right, thanks for the info.

Re: Windows 8

No need to appologize. It is difficult to navigate the search function with so many threads. It also would require a lot of reading, so probably not a bad idea to have a thread title pointing it out.

Have you guys seen the new story about Win8 reporting to Microsoft EVERY program you download? Apparently they are trying to figure out how users use their pc's to reduce the crashes. The reporting CAN be turned off but is apparently a multi click involved process.

Re: Windows 8

I saw something about this, there are a bunch of options for it when your doing the install and if you turn all of the "smart screen" things to off then it /should/ be disabled. They also said its for screening programs against a known list of ones with viruses and promised they won't be making a database of our habits... but I still turned it all off.

Re: Windows 8

Got a developers mail yesterday about a new test-build of BOINC - 7.0.36 supporting W8 native install and the latest 306.xx WHQL NVidia drivers plus first confirmations arriving that "correct values" are reported for the primary GPU. Been running this since last night... no sweat.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.36_windows_x86_64.exe
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.36_windows_intelx86.exe

There also builds for Linux and OS-X

changelog: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6698&nowrap=true#45639

The 7.0.34 to 7.0.35 to 7.0.36 changes are the interesting pieces for GPU crunchers.

Thanks for the information links, Sek. Nothing as constant as change. New Nvidia drivers are always worrysome. wink I still do not see Win 8 benefits for high-end crunching desktops. Another Vista? whistling

Re: Windows 8

Thanks for that link, finally got around to installing it and there was quite the jump up in boinc's reported benchmarks. Not to happy about them moving the message log into a new separate window though.
