No problems in the past. Just upgraded to a new notebook. Have just installed wcg_boinc_6.10.58_windows_intelx86.exe from this website to BOTH Admin and Standard Accounts. I mainly use the Standard (non-admin) Account on my notebook for safety reasons. BOINC runs fine (and automatically) under Admin Account. But does not run at all under Standard Account. When I tried to run it directly when under Standard Account, I received this message: "The item referred to by this shortcut cannot be accessed. You may not have the appropriate permissions." Please help ---------- My system: Acer Aspire S3-391 Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit Intel I7 3517u |

Hi Tom WCG,
The even more secure installation [unininstal, reinstall needed also for what fredski suggests], is to select in the advanced installer screen [Protected application execution] with the above [Allow all users]. BOINC is sandboxed [special limited rights account], so what comes in from the connected projects can only go back there and nowhere else. BOINC obtained from WCG has been security code audited in addition. It's because their endorsed versions go to big college and corporate clients who run BOINC by the thousands of installations. The *Zero Risk* assurance required. Keep on crunching. |

Successful! Thanks so much, Fredski and Sekerob. Both my Admin and Standard accounts are now crunching away
Please bear with my limited knowledge and newby's questions..... 1. First of all, I have complete trust in WCG to allow it to run under both my Admin and Standard accounts for years. The reason I mainly use the Standard account is to protect myself from malwares when surfing or opening documents. 2. Just for your information, I spent many hours installing and uninstalling BOINC without success (activating the "Allow all users" option, of course). I was unsuccessful even when I deleted the old Standard account and set up a new one. The success came after I activated both the "Allow all users" and the "Install as a service and run under a restricted account" and had to reboot the notebook. May be it was the rebooting that cleared out the old "Run under Admin only" setting??? 3. Do I understand correctly that it doesn't matter whether I login as Admin or Standard user (and loging in and out many times)? This same notebook will run the same BOINC works (tasks, transfers, etc.) and does everything as if there is only one and the same system? 4. With the "Install as a service and run under a restricted account" option running, what are the drawbacks to be aware of (i.e., uses more RAM, more load to the CPU, etc.)? If there are no big problems, why not make it a default setting? Again, thank you for your time and my apology for all these newby's questions. |
