Hi Dataman,
I too saw this on "Notices" and was shocked as it seemed to come without any previous indication. This has happened before on other non-WCG projects as principal players move on with their lives/careers. I am sorry to see it end this way. I read the material on their web page and I am still a bit confused as to what their next steps will be. I hope it does not end up as a huge archived file on an unused server. I got some advance notice. This is a sudden change forced by the 'sequester' cut in research funds. Rich's shrunken research team will concentrate on post-processing of the database, which could make it easy to slowly transition into some research projects using the database. I expect the database we contributed to will see increased usage for the next few years rather than decreased.![]() ![]() That could be wishful thinking on my part, but I can produce a reasonable argument for it. The obvious question is are any new WCG projects on the way? We're down to only Clean Energy (which is unusable for many people) and FAAH, which will likely dry up pretty quickly itself once everyone piles onto it. We also have DSFL, GFAM, SN2S(full speed in some weeks), HFCC(also due to resume sometime this year). I'm sure we'll have new projects this year. The HCC scientists reported they will run a new project on the grid and the HPF2 scientists have also left that door open in this update. Commercial value of what we delivered to Dr. Bonneau... 37 million US. As a first known 'victim' of sequester, it's sad to see how science and education, the base of a developed society is being 'saved' on... short term thinking, long term impact. I couldn't agree more. In the US, Congress seems to find a ridiculous amount of money to spend on weapons, but education and research has been shortchanged for years, and the result is self evident. I hope we get our priorities straight so projects like this will continue. It never ceases to amaze me who people vote for. ![]() ![]() “Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. I'm a little bummed that gastro won't get crunched, but I'm glad the results have been beneficial. Good luck to those moving on to bigger and better things! This is of a fair bit of personal interest to me, do you know how much of the Gastro-Intestinal protein work was crunched? I can't find any recent up dates on it. I'm going with what was posted here: http://bonneaulab.bio.nyu.edu/wcg/thread_2012_12_04.html It's of personal interest to me as well. Looks to me like it was next in line but won't get crunched.. I hope I'm wrong:) |

Hey, they could send me the work units I'll do the work voluntarily to assemble the work units and maintain the project,I dont wanna see it end. There is too much value scientifically in what this lab is doing.

There is too much value scientifically in what this lab is doing. And I'll help write the software for ya! I have some experience with scalable multi-format/multi-endpoint data processing and aggregation. It's probably not that easy, but a little wishful thinking never hurt:) |

After all, by the very quick 'back of an envelope' calculations, utilising the resources of WCG have saved the lab's over $37 million, which isn't something to be sniffed at, so being able to easily restart the project up again, would (in my view), be the best thing to do so as to continue/further the research. ![]() |

I'll totally fly from topeka to NYU to meet with individuals so they would feel secure in the projects continuance. I've got tons of hardware and software experience and can SQuirreL around a database all day and with becay up above im sure we could make everything run efficiently plus probably many great people on this forum also have experience that would be helpful.
