Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water - Linux Only - May 7th 2012 - Issues Thread

The original 7 betas completed just fine and all finished within minutes of each other as they were started simulaneously. Output from top on both my dual and quad core machines stayed consistantly 96-99% on all cores throughout the processing. I never ran into the stuck WU issue during the original production runs but that could have been the luck of the draw.

I am processing two make up betas (detached) simultaneously on my dual core and they are over 70% complete and running fine.

14 returned, 10valid, 4PV. All crunched with other CFSW betas, no problems to report. Even the little atom powered file server managed 2 in 1gb of ram.

I'm ready for the next round of Beta units. biggrin

Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water - Linux Only - May 7th 2012 - Issues Thread

Hello WCG-Techs.

What is the rationale, and objective of this beta-CFSW? How does the roadmap of the WU for said beta-CFSW (for Linux-only) tie in with the production-CFSW-WUs (for Linux and Windows CFSW-WUs)?

Thanks
;

andzgrid, the objective of this beta was to test that work units didn't stall or become stuck like the previous version. This was a problem that was specific to the Linux application.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Must have misunderstood, I thought the problem seemed to be when quad-core or more WUs were running on Linux?

I received 1 BETA WU at a time on my dual-core Linux device for this BETA round. Didn't have a quad-core, got lucky and received the BETAs. whistling Happy to have helped. peace

Powhatan, you are correct that it is shows up commonly on Multiple core machines (we did experience it on dual-core machines as well). BETA is set to distribute 1 per core (or thread if you have HyperThreading). So if you have an 8 core machine, you can get a max of 8 BETA work units at a time. But since this application will be running on more than just multi-core machines, we need to test single core machines as well.

Thanks,

Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water - Linux Only - May 7th 2012 - Issues Thread

Hello uplinger

Thanks for the response. Now that I know the context of this particular beta-test, I'm happy to report that, of the six(6)-beta-CFSW-WUs my Ubuntu12.04 machine got, none of those WUs stalled nor got stuck even as these WUs were executing simultaneously on the said machine. The WUs were also all evaluated as valid with an average runtime of 3.0hrs. Looks pretty good from all angles.

P.S.
The grantedCredits, I find as somewhat on the low side, averaging 75.7-points.

Good day

As can be seen from the time it took my machine to crunch this unit, the users should beware that anything less than a P4 will take very long.

P4 1.6gz LinuxMint 12 512mb ram

Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water - Linux Only - May 7th 2012 - Issues Thread

All went fine with the Beta CFSW but...
Twice now since I changed to 100% CFSW my laptop has had multiple stuck WU. sad
It is running Mint 10 (based on Ubuntu 10.10) with 16 GB RAM -- i7-2720QM CPU
The desktop computer running Mint 7 (based on Ubuntu 9.04) with 12 GB RAM -- i7-950 CPU has not had any issues so far.
The only reason I even noticed they were stuck is because of the System Monitor on my taskbar was showing 63% CPU usage.
Oh well , I changed the laptop to run SN2S for now...

By the way has anyone looked at BOINCstats today. Seems a little different. confused
