Target-9 work units ready for HFCC

The Chiba research team has provided the first set of 70 batch inputs for target-9 and these work units are currently being built and indexed into BOINC. The remaining work units for target-9 are expected to be made available in 1-2 weeks. As a result, we aren't anticipating any period of time where work units for HFCC will be depleted until the end of the project (target-9 is currently the last planned target for HFCC).

SO does "the first set of 70 batch inputs" mean 70 units times 2 for replication, or does it mean LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of workunits?! I also see " we aren't anticipating any period of time where work units for HFCC will be depleted until the end of the project" above but it also isn't clear to me how many that means. I am NOT trying to tie you to a specific number, just a ballpark idea will do. I understand about the need to redo some and other problems that may or may not arise.

Re: Target-9 work units ready for HFCC

Hello mikey159b,
I will toss in my own 2 cents here. The work received from a project is normally chopped up into actual work units on the WCG side. Experience with a particular target sometimes changes the original estimates by quite a bit. So the answer to your question is LOTS and LOTS, even though I suspect that Seippel could guess within a factor of 2 how many work units will eventually be made from the work supplied by the project scientists.

The staff always speak of batches. They receive a batch from a project, split it up into work units, get the results and reassemble them into a batch. When the batch is completely reassembled, it is sent back to the project. What is actually done probably changes a bit from project to project, but they do not bother speaking about all the details. The 70 that Seippel uses refers to the 'batches' that only the WCG staff will see.

Re: Target-9 work units ready for HFCC

What a coincidence, my crunchers are ready for Target-9 work units.

Great news!

Cool but what about a science update?
The last one was in August 2011.

Lawrence's post provides a very good summary and the short answer is "lots and lots." On average, each batch input for HFCC creates roughly 20,000 work units. Also, each target for HFCC has 287 batch inputs total (although we currently only have the first 70 for target-9).

Re: Target-9 work units ready for HFCC

~2855000 compounds (as with the previous 8 targets) cut in 2 halves, spread over 287 batches, same as the previous 8 targets.

The only news needed is a post to say the first T9 was received, so the progress % can be calibrated to show 88.89% overall progress. (The current percent extrapolation shows slightly higher at 88.93% due the finicky fudge that applies for repairs and resents on replied "no replies")
