Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

CFSW is now the lowest per-hour credit rewarding science at WCG. HPF2 used to be the incumbent for that spot.

Interesting.... shock thinking sick angry frustrated

Why aren't ALL projects on the SAME level for per-hour credit ?

Are some projects considered to be more important or worthwhile than others ???

This has been a topic of discussion here on numerous occasions and rehashing it again is an effort in futility IMHO. It is what it is.

Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

We are looking into the runtime differences for CFSW. It is not a 32/64 bit issue but XP is running much slower than Win7. At this point the cause is unknown but we are investigating.

Thanks,
armstrdj

Thanks for the update smile

Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

I wonder how fast Linux will run them comparatively to XP & 7 ?
Once they get Linux sorted out that is... wink
I have the choice of XP x64 or Linux x64 so I hope one of them will do well...

I am seeing normal runtimes (3-4 hrs) on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64 and Win 7 x64 and slower runtimes (6-7 hrs) on Win XP.

Ok point taken , but it's the first I've heard of it and even though Sustainable Water is my home team so to speak ,
it doesn't exactly encourage or inspire me or others to contribute to this project...
I happen to live at the foot of that mountain on the badge , so after the dust settles and the Linux issue is ironed out I will for sure join in.
It just makes me wonder how the point deficit will effect others decision to contribute or not.

Thanks for the info AgrFan.
That at least is reassuring.
I hate to crunch for Team Linux Mint using Windows wink

IMHO if you're contributing to this project for points then you're going to be disappointed. Is it important enough to you that you'd do it for no points, badges, whatever?

You shouldn't get hung up on the points thing. And crunching while the dust is flying is the most fun.

Some representative work units, all boxes allowed to use 100% cpu (except the VM which is at 68%), all running CFSW only. PPH is the average according to wcgdaws over the last two days.

A small VM - Win7X64 allocated 1 virtual Xeon X5650 at 2.66GHz, 2gb RAM on SATA disk array. 1 w/u at all times.

Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

pramo,
I don't know for sure but I would guess it's the Blue Ridge Mountains. Possibly Rockfish Gap. ???
Maybe not though... The James River is pretty far south of there.
Anyway , that's what it looks like so I'm going to pretend it is. biggrin
