I'm seeing really weird behavior from BOINC manager (7.0.25) which just looks wrong.
I currently have 8 work units running according to the Tasks view in the BOINC manager. This is confirmed if I check the running process in Process Explorer. However, Process Explorer shows me that all those 8 processes each have 1 child (which seems to be doing all the work). Those children are constantly getting suspended and resumed. Like every other second this happens and goes back and forth. I'm certainly no expert, but I can't imagine that this behavior is very beneficial to overall processing. To my knowledge, I run with default settings. Or I have failed to properly reset them. Because I assumed my custom device profiles are responsible for this. But if I didn't mess it up, I should be on default. |

Hello gencha,
The default profile is designed to run on a laptop with minimal cooling. It runs for 3 seconds, then suspends the project for 2 seconds. I recommend that you set your desktop to the Maximum Performance option. (My Grid - Device Manager - Device Profile) If you have hyperthreading and want to reduce heat / improve responsiveness, you might reduce the percentage of processors used down to 50%, which would run one project per physical core. ....and 7.0.25 is not a version recommended by WCG! It IS the new "release' version by Boinc though. Meaning WCG better be ready because the users are coming that use it!! To be honest WCG has been VERY good at this in the past. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by mikey159b at Apr 12, 2012 12:20:28 PM] |

Thank you very much.
I have now adjusted by default profile to Maximum Output. I didn't do so because I feared that setting would interfere with my daily work too much (fans spinning up, etc). But I will follow your advice and limit the number of active processors to 75% or 50% if required. Regarding the BOINC version. I upgraded to the latest stable release since I assumed the behavior I was observing might be due to a compatibility problem between my new hardware and BOINC. |
