The hype-machine has been active for Intel's IvyBridge lately.

Whilst unconfirmed, word in the industry is that Intel may very well move up its launch...

Intel does appear to be readying it's launch. I still say it's a shame that PERSONALLY I believe these chips "offer" more for mobile needs than desktop.
PCIE 3.0 will be nice, and as much as I wanted to get one when they came out, that 3820 from Microcenter for $250 was the sweet spot for me. Still wish they would've added more native PCIE lanes. Dual channel memory is fine, but the 16 native lanes is why I quit caring ![]() |

From what I can tell of your kind of hardware-preferences, 5pot, yours is the high-end type, fitting for a member of XtremeSystems. Not to worry, the extreme end of IB is coming up after the mainstream IB, and logic dictates that anything 'extreme' cannot possibly be happy in a 'for mobile' environment.

RUMOR has it, that they may be releasing an 8 core this winter, but my guess is that will depend on the results of PileDriver. Still, at $1000, too rich for my blood.
----------------------------------------EDIT: And yes I do like high-end.. lol... As long as I feel I can justify the price. I do have to sometimes do some mental gymnastics to make it seem ok worth it though. There was a guy on overclock.net or some other high-end forum, where people were discussing Big Kepler, or whatever will be released in May from NVIDIA, and a person goes, "Aren't you people happy with your 680's? They just came out!! Next response=,"I think you're on the wrong site, hellokitty.com is -----> [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 22, 2012 2:32:58 PM] |

... I believe these chips "offer" more for mobile needs than desktop. The chip does smell 'for mobile' alright if this CNet webpage is any indication. Oh, the IvyBridge did launch today, 2012Apr23Mo.; |

I saw the reveiws, and so far I am not the least bit impressed. They keep commenting on how good it's HD 4000 has improved, but ANYONE who would be spending the $300 for the chip for gaming WOULD BUY A DISCRETE GPU. I don't understand their logic on commenting, "Oh WOW it can play skyrim on low settings at 30FPS!!" Who cares.
----------------------------------------Now a different story can be said for mobile usage. Since they sip less power, and you wouldn't necessarily need a GPU in the scenario. However, one reviewer noticed only an extra 12 minutes in battery life on these quad cores. Have to wait and see how the others perform, but these days, quad (for mobile) is all I buy (sorry to sound stuck up but I am a power user) I also find it interesting that many of the reviewers NEVER commented about PCIE 3.0. I know the bandwidth isn't needed right now, but that's one of it's biggest features. The biggest one I think is USB 3.0, which some have brought up. 5-15% increase in performance, but at the cost of lower overclockability. Already saw one boutique PC vendor who had a 3770 matched with 2 680s for like $3500 and the first thing I thought of was, "This is basically the setup I was going for, until I realized the PCIE lane issue (1155 only allows for 16) Directly to CPU anyways. Looks like I'll be waiting for Haswell, since IB-E will probably not offer much else. Glad I got my 3820 EDIT: Might as well say one nice thing, I think it was smart for them to switch to 3D transistors, but I feel the potential hasn't been used. Should be quicker, MUCH quicker IMH-non engineering-O [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 23, 2012 7:40:08 PM] |

Looks like I'll be waiting for Haswell, since IB-E will probably not offer much else. Agreed. I had planed to do some upgrading but I will now also wait for Haswell.
