skgiven, which line are we looking at to see how much time our GPU actually spent on the work unit, then? Is it the "total kernel time"?

Also, I just got another gpu unit:

Total time = 400 seconds, Total kernel time: 197.169022, CPU time used = 47.377504.

For this one I did NOT have a cpu core available to help out. So this is a good contrast with my post above, as the previous one had a free cpu core to help.

Yeah, if I'm right the "total kernel time" just means GPU runtime, Memory Transfer Time is the time to load/unload the task onto the GPU, CPU time is just that and the elapsed time is the 'total time' for the entire WU, 684 seconds for my Wingman,

I noticed that when freeing a CPU thread, the initial CPU portion of the task uses a full CPU, as expected. So I would expect freeing a core/thread helps, but the CPU time might vary, so you would need to run several with and without a free core/thread to see how much difference it makes. It might also be beneficial to free more than one thread.

Wondering if you set max thread to 7 out of 8 threads in your settings, if when the GPU wu switches over to CPU if it uses that 8th thread or does it pause a thread already in use to maintain 7 threads as specified in your settings. Anyone know? Might be helpful to know this so folks can adjust properly.

I think so (as with other projects); I set Boinc to use 7 of 8 threads, and CPU usage went up to 100% (all threads), but I only looked at one task, and they do whiz past!

Think your correct as I watched I bit and didn't see any wu paused to accommodate the GPU wu. Wanted someone to verify in case I didn't catch it. Thanks skgiven.

I saw my first one do the work, and it used the one that wasn't being used.


EDIT: Also on my second one, I was using all my cores already, and it didn't pause any of the work units those were doing, either. It just seemed to take enough cpu time to get done what it needed to. I wasn't watching it til the last 20 seconds or so, though.

I watched several beta GPU work units with Process Explorer and GPU-Z.
In windows 'normal' processes run with a priority of 8; Boinc CPU work units with a priority of 4 and the CPU portion of GPU work units with a priority of 6. This means that that the GPU tasks will run in preference to normal work units but after normal processes.
The work unit used a full CPU core for 20 seconds with no GPU processing.
While the GPU ran 40 to 60% load, the CPU used 2 or 3% of a core.
Finally the work unit used a full CPU core for 60 seconds with no GPU processing.
Hardware i7 2600k 8 threads; Radeon HD 6770.

Seems like the ATI's are generally faster than Nvidia on this beta test.

Anyone out there with an ATI HD 7*** series card card? I'm curious how these compare to the older generations

Nvidia GTX 570 @1620 MHz
175 seconds, Total kernel time: 83.616562 , CPU time used = 164.393854

Nvidia GTX 480 @1401 MHz
188 seconds, Total kernel time: 95.299789 , CPU time used = 179.510351

Nvidia GTX 460 @1440 MHz
320 seconds, Total kernel time: 255.617493, CPU time used = 310.629191

AMD Tahiti is HD 79xx, see second post in this thread for my wingman's times.
