Re: Can't Use ( in my password?

Hi,

Part of a password in your password? Scary. Guessing you're talking about special characters, No you can't as explained in an FAQ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16935. My thinking is, expressed before, that there is nothing mission critical about passwords on volunteer computing... What can they do if it were found out? Change your preferences on My Grid, which is about it IMNSHO.

P.S. rereading the FAQ, realized it needs updating... No special characters in member names either in alignment with BOINC standards.

Re: Can't Use ( in my password?

Well, would love to participate but I use BOINC and BOINCstats to manage the projects I am involved in and I have 4 machines running projects (with a fifth to be added soon) and I am not going to go through the work of changing it all just for one project (albeit a good project).

Thank you for your response and the link to the FAQ (of which I did scan before posting the question).

I'm not quite sure what are you referring to. I have participated in several BOINC projects (see signature) and I have a different password on each one of them. No problems at all with BOINCstats. The only thing that has to be the same AFAIK is the e-mail address.

Re: Can't Use ( in my password?

We're sorry about that. As you told the world that ( is in your password, and you think that without special characters the passwords for BOINC are not secure enough, crackable so to speak, you're now maybe needing to change all the passwords anyhow.

I maintain a password storage program that is so fripping secure that if I would loose the password to that, I'd be in doodo. All the passwords I use, each program / account etc a different one are rated by that program being a mix of small and capital and numbers and they all pass muster. Banks accept these passwords, so really, cant see how BOINC as disposable as disposable can be... devices detached and linked to a new account in no time, needs to have one that is stronger than what banks require.

Just my 2 Euro cent opinion.

P.S. Someone wrote few days ago he was using the weak account key with BAM and WCG to register devices to WCG. Don't ask me how [I'm seeing this WAK on my BAM profile page], but that makes member name and password use superfluous.

Actually, your BAM/BOINCStats password has to be the same as the ones used on your projects for BAM to work... at least, when I made it different to my BOINC project passwords, things would not work anymore... but that was years ago when I last tried that.

Re: Can't Use ( in my password?

bono_vox, I cannot join WCG from boincstats.com because my password has a parenthesis in it and that is considered a "special" character which is potentially apparently a risk according to the FAQ that SekeRob pointed me to. If I change my password at boincstats, it creates a new hash that I have to then go and reattach all the projects I run on my Linux box.

SekeRob, there is a lot more to my passwords than just a parenthesis and I never said anything about the security or insecurity of passwords for BOINC. What I am saying is, I don't understand why I can't have what I want for a password. It is just a password... If a "special" character in a password is a potential security risk, according to the FAQ and IBM, hmm, don't even know what to say. I am not saying what WCG has chose to do for their password is wrong or what-not, just that I don't like it and don't see it being worth the work it will take me to change everything (granted, the length of time it took me to ask the question and type the replies I probably could have done it, it is the principle to me).

Re: Can't Use ( in my password?

No, what I said is the inverse: The special characters do not add to security... but maybe IBM does not know about properly securing their network accesses. Alpha/Numeric mixed do very very well.

Yes, good old principles... how much time do we waste on the internet with that.
