It's because... BOINC is not W8 ready yet out of the box, but maybe the latest *test* version 7.0.28.
64 bits: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.28_windows_x86_64.exe 32 bits: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.28_windows_intelx86.exe You'll have to test if it install as: 1) advanced with Protected Application Execution (PAE) 2) advanced with Allow all users 3) user level only For sure, if BOINC runs, WCG will run... that's already been demonstrated. But, go to top and read the prior experiences by posters gone before you, then share what you've found out. PAE install of most interest as that is the service install with limited right user accounts [such as boinc_admin_user] ;>) --//-- |

Here a developer forum thread indicating that 7.0.28 installs fine on the W8 Consumer Preview, but does not say how: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=7612 . Given the GPU is being used, this was *not* a PAE install... either user level or allow all users was selected.
------------------------------------------//-- edit: No matter what, when running the installer from File Explorer, right click on it and select to run the installer as administrator. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 2, 2012 1:32:54 PM] |

Please make sure we Win7 users will be able to continue for a few years yet. I have no intention of changing to Win8.

Except for W98 support that was dropped [which may still allow some of the older sciences to run], not anticipating for any Woz from XP onwards to be dropped from support. Internally, W8 will be tested by WCG techs to ensure it remains... forward compatible. The key though is the agent, speak BOINC itself can be installed, and with the latest test versions that seems to be the case. :D
------------------------------------------//-- P.S. Ballmer supposedly said that he was anticipating 500 million installs by same time next year, but that was pipe-dreaming aloud no doubt. There's still a fair percent of XP contributing... so no worries. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 2, 2012 2:02:36 PM] |

P.S. Ballmer supposedly said that he was anticipating 500 million installs by same time next year, but that was pipe-dreaming aloud no doubt. There's still a fair percent of XP contributing... so no worries. No doubt that comment was made from his hot tub and I would wager I know what was in his pipe to bring on those hopeful dreams. No doubt Win 8 works with crunching. The question I would ask is why would anyone upgrade to it? I did not download the Beta version but I did read the pre-release doc and I can't see anything that benefits me. Just my opinion, but it looks like it is targeted to hand-held devices. I don't see any crunching benefits. Each will have to decide on their own though. Personaly I have given Balmer too much money over the years and he won't even share his pipe with me. Crunch on ..... ![]() ![]() |

Nice link there, Sgt.Joe.
Give my money to MS for Win8 so I can have in my desktop the smartphone/tablet look-and-feel and UI-experience? That's a good way to sell Win7 alright! ![]() ; |

For those actually running W8 preview, there is a reproducable bug with the latest 7.0.28 test client:
Topic: BOINC Manager v7.0.28 Crash - Statistics - All projects (sum) Running Windows 8 x64, using the x64 version of BOINC Manager v7.0.28. I get a reproducible crash using these steps: - Attach to an Account Manager - BOINC contacts my projects - I haven’t completed much work for most projects - The statistics buttons are set to: Show host total, Show project list (ie: the button says Hide project list), Mode View is: All projects (together) - I click on: All projects (sum) The manager just hangs for several seconds, then disappears. So, All projects (sum) must have a bug. Anyone who has this combo, and incurs the BM crash... stay away from the Statistics tab. --//-- |
