Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview Released

I have 7.0.18 running in a virtual machine. What did you mean it didn't play nice? I haven't ran it long, but would love the heads up for any headaches you have seen. I did install as a service since I didn't have any intent on running GPU.

According to a thread at Seti, sorry no link, ver 7 does not work any better than ver 6 on Windows8. What DOES work is to do several 'fixes' or install as a 'service', as you did. The problem with a 'service' install is that you can't then crunch with a gpu, and that is a deal breaker for me! The 'fixes' are to export and import registry parts from a working Win7 pc to your Win8 Boinc install and then to create the Boinc group accounts. It is very detailed and not a good choice for those that don't know what they are looking at. According to the Seti thread Rom Walton, developer for the installation code, is going to be trying to fix it this weekend, so expect a new version coming out soon. Rom is VERY good and will work on it until either it is fixed or is told to move on, he works for Dr. Anderson.

Okay I found the link:

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview Released

I'm more than happy with my Ubuntu which gives me the most bang for my resources. No need to fork over hard-earned money to the altar of Microsoft and definitely no need to continue the Windows addiction with Windows_v8.

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview Released

To quote a post from the Alpha mail list [developers/testers], (which was old new to me):
Might be old news to you but, Windows Display Driver Model Enhancements:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/br259098
WDDM v1.2 is used with W8.

I see MS increased the use of video resources (memory) by the operating system; good for the OS but probably not for crunching on discrete GPU's.

For the interested, maybe worth to bookmark for those with loose plans to upgrade... a W8 FAQ in WIP: http://activewin.com/faq/windows8.shtml

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview Released

Am enjoying win7 64. Seems Microsoft is following apple on their next OS upgrade. Still running snow leopard on my mini. Won't be upgrading to either one from what I am seeing on both new OS's.

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview Released

Think the interest on the part of the DC community is, how much W8 is going to offload onto the GPU and how it impacts / which GPU. The I7 SB/IB will have an advantage on that front with the on-CPU dye GPU functions. My laptop is set to automatically switch the usage between that and the ATI Radeon card, depending on things such as resource needs and energy consumption considerations. Mostly running in Performance optimized mode, occasionally ''coolest'', which knocks the CPU hrz down by .4Ghz, and most silent, then going down to 1.8Ghz.

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview Released

Banging the windows door is always a good pass-time, but for the biggest majority of crunchers there's no option [neither have I for at least 1 *work* device]... It has to be Windows... mostly coming with a new computer. So let's stick to that... W8 as the topic and the experiences and workarounds to learn, so when it comes, we know what to tell to get crunching.

thx
