Going backwards.

Got a Wu that was at 88%, looked at it 5 hours later to find it was at 40%. Looked at it this morning it is at 10%. sad
Current time is 34 hours.

No error messages to report, mainly due to the PC crashing everytime I do anything.

Problem is I need to rebuild the PC (P4 running Win2000, BOINC 6.2.28) and have another WU waiting.

TIA
Patrick

Re: Going backwards.

Going backwards means that the result is stuck or goes back to the beginning each time it crashes. If not, restart of the client will usually kick such tasks back into order.

But, if your computer is crashing "everytime I do anything" there''s as you've surmised, a more fundamental problem and a rebuild is probably the best route forward. Can't help you with that.

Re: Going backwards.

Stopped BOINC and currently migrating all my data to another PC before reformating the HD.

Re: Going backwards.

Hi SekeRob, I actually been seeing this behaviour too lately on other projects too (like CEP2 and Human Proteome Folding Phase 2) and I was wondering what exactly do you mean by
restart of the client
?

Use the "Reset project" button in the Advanced view? Does that mean that the units themselves will be lost and will go to other users for processing?

Thanks!

Edit: I actually witnessed such a strange occurrence this very morning when one of my CEP2 tasks that was already something like 34% done (had reached first major checkpoint) just reset back to 0.1% for no apparent reason. I looked in the stderr file and saw it had completed like 14 iterations before restoring the time to 0. I made a note to self to start a thread of my own when I get back home and attach the text from the stderr file, but when I saw this topic, I just had to know. Sorry for hijacking this thread, pcwr.

Re: Going backwards.

Restart is not Reset. Easiest is to boot the computer, properly. The other way is to stop then start the service via task manager [admin rights required] service tab, *not* kill in the process view. More sophisticated ways are described in this FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16378

Re: Going backwards.

Thanks, SekeRob! I tried it last night and it did the trick.
