As opposed to the usual random "server can't open database " messages there were scattered short periods of:
----------------------------------------18/01/2012 5:32:06 PM World Community Grid Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. 18/01/2012 5:32:06 PM World Community Grid Requesting new tasks for CPU 18/01/2012 5:32:07 PM World Community Grid Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks 18/01/2012 5:32:07 PM World Community Grid Message from server: Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance today hence the comments. I bolded the relevent part for emphasis... ![]() |

This has been an ongoing issue for weeks now. I was hoping the database upgrade would fix the issues but it only seems to be getting worse. Whenever I try to report a bunch of tasks, I more often than not see "server can't open database". As of 0:00 GMT, the validator is at least two hours slow if it's running at all. Seen this rarely from my outback corner on the planet, but yesterday was significant in intermittency of being able to connect to server [the maint message] and to clear "Ready to Report" [evening hours], with only few back-offs in uploading. Whilst, the validators were hip-hop too, so much so that about 20 CPU years of production spilled over into Thursday. Guess this was post-upgrade hick-up fixing [the "too good to be true performance improvement" getting the obligatory Murphy visit]. At least, all is well now and me logs show from about 00:00 UTC no further bouncing. --//-- |

I apologize. I should have posted in known issues. We have encountered a character set issue that didn't present itself with MySQL 5.0. The website tables in DB2 are in UTF8 but the MySQL tables were in latin1. Previously, this hadn't presented a problem. However, following the update, unicode characters were being rejected so we had to convert a few tables over to UTF8. This would have been fast and pretty much transparent to the end users except that the DBA's workstation crashed right before we converted one table and it took awhile to get it back online. I forgot to re-enable the schedulers while we waited for the DBA to get his workstation back up. I will take a look at the db connection issue. That should have improved after the upgrade.

----------------------------------------Guess most of those years hit me directly. Today's midpoint stats show more points than my total for yesterday. Kevin, thanks for the update. Guess we'll ride out the unevenness and hope for the best. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

Kevin, like they say, no good deed goes unpunished. Who'd think character sets could matter all of a sudden. If that Murphy fellow wasn't so dang pernicious, all lot of folks would have a lot easier time. |

In hind cast, then there must have been an extra 10+ years over what hit you as the spill worked out to be 30+. Wednesday/Thursday split in 2 gave 816/2 = 408, where Wednesday's reported figure was 373. Yes, we're pumping them up, those contributions :D Crunching On, in latin1 hands down too ;>) --//-- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 20, 2012 12:44:37 PM] |
