So, here is the new build I have going at the present. Keep in mind that I'm buying my parts as I get money and trying to be frugal yet worthwhile.
----------------------------------------Motherboard retails around $250-$300 US. I picked one up on eBay for $125 and am waiting on it to arrive. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/MSI-Big-Bang-XPower-Motherboard/1015 Ram: Patriot Sector 5 8GB (2X4GB) DDR3 $26.99 US. (Will add more later) 250GB Seagate SATA hard drive And to begin with a few or most of the cards on my list here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31724_offset,0 Obviously I still need a processor and power supply. I'm looking at some i7 920's on eBay. I haven't yet decided on what power supply I will pick up, but to run all 6 PCI express slots with video cards, I will most likely need something big. I typically run my systems somewhat naked and will probably also have a box fan blowing into it 24/7 too. I plan on replacing 3 older systems with this build. eMachines T5274a (dual core), Dell Optiplex GX280 (single core hyper threaded), and a frankenstein (single core hyper threaded) will soon join the scrap heap or find their ways into needy homes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Until just recently my local Welfare folks would accept donated pc's for their Foster Kids. The pc's MUST be cleaned up prior to donation which means a wiped hard drive and then a clean install of Windows or Linux. They closed the program down due to budget cuts around me but you might call your local Department of Social Services, sometimes the first 'S' is changed to an 'F' for Family. Mine gave receipts and I donated over a dozen pc's over the years. ![]() ![]() |

Just thinking aloud some...
----------------------------------------BIG psu's seem to be very expensive. Would 2 smaller ones do the job Cheaper? It is not quite that simple to select these but I feel that it is the way ahead for those with more gpu's... especially those that run caseless ![]() |

I'm really not sure how to set that up properly OldChap. I would however experiment on older systems first if you know of a good "how to" video or instructional page.
----------------------------------------On a side note, I have also mustered up a 320GB Sata mobile hard drive out of a dead laptop to use as a secondary drive. I might test it out as a BOINC data directory and see if it handles well with all 8 threads and 6-7 GPU's all competing for access. I know my current quad core does just fine with 4 threads and 2 GPU's with a mobile drive as the BOINC data drive. I had 4 computer cases still in the box from a few years back when many of them were doing the free after rebate deals. I am planning on using the ULTRA brand XBlaster case. And yes, it was Free after rebate...LOL I however will have to wait until I get the board to make sure everything fits proper and can still breathe. On the shelf, I also already have a DVD burner, so wont need to pick up one of those. I also have a 2GB thumb drive that I will most likely use for Ready Boost. And I also have an extra copy of Windows 7 Professional X64 sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Edit: This board also takes the 8 pin connector rather then the 6 pin and it can take a second 8 pin connector for extra power (recommended highly for all slots to be used). Since none of my old power supplies have the 8 pin connector, I will most likely have to buy new anyways. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Jan 13, 2012 2:02:46 AM] |

But I too might be interested in how one would connect two 450 watt psu's to one motherboard and run two, or more, AMD 5770 gpu's! Right now I am buying one 750 watt psu to do it. ![]() ![]() |

If you don't care too much for looks here is a way to make things run cooler. Go to your local Lowes, HD, whatever and pick up the largest window AC unit filter you can find. They look like a big piece of sponge and are about 1/4 inch thick. Also buy a roll of velcro tape. Remove the side cover from the tower and place the prickly side of the velcro tape around the edges of the case. Stick the filter to the velcro tape and trim off the excess. Done. Allows for much better cooling and the filter with stop 95% of the dust. Just remove, clean and replace the filter as needed.
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

Info is a bit old but still current (sic)
----------------------------------------It would not do any harm to read through but the part you need is in #9. The idea of putting load on the 5v is a good one although some newer psu's have no problem with crossloading. http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=287485 If you want any help any time on this, post questions or mail me ![]() |
