That's some good reading OldChap and seams pretty simple. My case would have to be modded since I don't plan on leaving the board completely exposed somewhere. Looking around, the cables seem to be in the ballpark of ~$20 US. I doubt I build my own cable for now. I will have to keep that experiment in mind for later use.
----------------------------------------However, since I'm gonna have to buy a new power supply anyways, I will have to crunch some numbers to see which design would be cheaper. I'm thinking probably just a larger PS. After factoring in additional costs for all of the adapters I would need to get to make my current ones compatible, I doubt I would be saving much. Jean...waiting for the new chips to come out will only bring hope for the current ones to fall in price. Otherwise, the new chips most likely wont work with my board. Or am I missing something? If the prices is what you are suggesting, then I'm already on top of it. That is why I'm watching prices right now rather then picking one up. However, I understand you can't wait forever which is why it will be my last part to pick up. That is the deadline for prices to fall for me. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

A little harder to search for from here but... looking at pc modding sites I found this one;
----------------------------------------http://www.frozencpu.com/products/5637/cpa-16..._Cable.html?tl=g11c413s91 I guess the reason I would go this route is that I spent on a seasonic x-650 which I am happy with and it will be ok with just MB and 1 GPU crunching. If I were to add more gpu's then I could purchase another of these to power 2 more gpu's (mine use in the order of 200w each) and still be in or near the sweet spot for efficiency. The alternative is to find a psu that will run around 800w at 50-80% load which would be a more expensive option for me. My cards are 5870's so less than top flight However my rigs run caseless. Having to make case bases/extensions to house a psu is not for everyone (although we do have one member that uses cardboard boxes as cases) ![]() EDIT: In the OP you mention running all six slots.... 6 cards?.... 1450w maybe more at 50 to 80% load ...is there such a beast to be able to do this with just one psu? that would need to be around 1815w minimum 2000w probably... Hmmmm Long term I think you will need to use this method anyway. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by OldChap at Jan 15, 2012 2:23:53 AM] |

Yeah....I picked up an i7 920 for like $150. I picked up the cables on eBay that I would need to run 2 power supplies. So, the only things I need now are just that, the PS's. Right now the only free power supply not in use is a cheapo Sunbeam 450W that was pulled from a scrapped out PC. I typically use Ultra Power Supplies and will most likely start with a 700W and then get a much bigger one later as funds come up. Obviously wont be running all six off of those, but will run a couple at least.
----------------------------------------Edit: However, I will most likely leave my nVidia 520 in my Q8200 PC since it currently runs GPUGrid and will most likely start the new build with 3 8400GS and 3 210's. The 8400's are rated for max draw of 71 watts and the 210's are rated for 31watts max draw. I will test the real life draw though as I add them one at a time to not over extend the available power at the time. I figured by leaving the 520 in the other box will help limit issues from having different class GPU's in the same box. I have noticed that a card that doesn't have the minimum video ram will still crunch if another GPU in the same box can pull units. ( I saw this at PrimeGrid with an 8400 that only had 128MB video in conjunction with one with 512MB) I had trouble with my 8400 trying to crunch GPUGrid work when I had both together as well. 8400 can theoretically complete those units, but they usually don't within their tight deadlines. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Feb 5, 2012 1:57:51 AM] |

I decided on this PS (Ultra LSP750 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Searc...No=3276567&CatId=2533) to begin with and will use the Sunbeam for testing the multi-PS setup. Then when I am ready to push the limits of the PS, I will buy a better one to replace the Sunbeam one with.
----------------------------------------There is also a possibility of me getting a free solid state drive sent my way, so I am crossing my fingers for that. I also picked up a stick of Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 4GB DDR3 RAM at no extra cost, so my build is looking pretty cost effective so far. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I got my CPU today with stock cooler and a nice surprise. The guy I bought from threw in a Cooler Master V8 heat sink. I gotta say that it is about 4 times the size of the stock cooler and looks like a V8 engine....lol. Good thing this will be an open system because I doubt it would fit in a standard case and certainly wouldn't want it in a tower with how heavy it is. I also got one of the two cables I ordered for the second power supply. Hopefully, I will get to start it up soon.

Well...before my new motherboard decided to go stupid on me...I did get the chance to test it with 5 GPU's running PrimeGrid's Cullen Woodall Sieve Cuda work units. Running an 8400GS 1GB + 2 8400GS 512MB +1 210 1GB + 1 210 512MB cards in this build, the Killa A Watt said it got up to 265 watts at the wall for the whole machine. I was only running the one Ultra power supply too. This was after an hour of running and monitoring the fluctuation in power. However, now I am only running a 210 and my 520 due to evidently known irritations with this board. I haven't yet decided whether I will keep it or find a different one.
