Goodbye Kodak?

I am sorry to here of Kodak's current financial problems, and the effects of those on the staff. Kodak was a part of my childhood, from my mother taking photo's on a box Brownie, to my own teenage years with an Instamatic.

Yet, what went wrong? Kodak made good digital cameras, so why did they not compete?

No more Kodak moments? It's very sad.

Re: Goodbye Kodak?

Kodak failed to quickly adopt to the new digital age with digital cameras. Kodak's mentality for years was selling those "yellow boxes" (film) instead of adopting to the new technological shifts occurring within its industry. While they recently tried selling printers and attempting to diversify away from film, such projects were too later and never addressed their core business being transformed right before their very eyes (film to digital cameras).

While I am of the opinion that much more should have been done sooner to address the quickly changing technological changes and consumer preferences for photography, Kodak's management was unresponsive and inadequate to address to fast changing changes within their industry right before their very eyes.

Any industry that fails to adopt to technological changes within its own industry will go the way of Kodak. If you should have any questions, please refer to the horse drawn carriage vs. automobiles concept, providing you can find any manufacturers of horse drawn carriages (Hint: Kodak is the horse drawn carriage in this example).

Re: Goodbye Kodak?

It is extremely rare to have very large corporations that dominate a segment technologically for decades and able to survive after a major technological change (not an evolution but a revolution) that simply renders the whole value chain obsolete.
The cemeteries are full of companies that died because they could not adapt, because the change was so big and with so profound impacts that they could not really grasp the whole "picture" wink

It's sad, but time marches on. Hopefully they'll serve as a lesson to other companies in other industries that they must adapt or face the same fate.
