making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

So I found the instructions to make a widget that displays how much CPU time I have contributed, and added that to my personal blog. I just now realized that there MUST be some Windows 7 desktop gadget that will display that HTML code. I just spent a frustrating half an hour trying to figure out how to do so, with the aim of having how much CPU time I've contributed so far living in a small neat widget right on my desktop. I give up! crying Anybody know how, or if this is even possible?
Thanks!
Jeff

Re: making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

The creature you need is the 'Amnesty' gadget generator. It was designed to work with Google Gadgets and put them on your Vista sidebar, but it works with W7 64 bit, and WCG widget code

http://www.amnestywidgets.com/GeneratorWin.html

Copy the code from WCG Widget and paste it into Amnesty. Don't bother searching for a Google gadget.

In the WCG HTML you'll see pixel sizes for WCG, put these also into the height and width boxes in Amnesty, give gadet a name and save.

When you call up Windows gadgets you'll see the your new WCG gadget & 'atom' symbol, click and WCG widget will appear on your desktop.

Re: making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

A brilliant tip, hardnews, an soon ported to the Start Here widgets topic. The web-developer has acknowledged the [not exactly working everywhere] functionality of the present widget and at some point said to come up with a http code version. Since, we have e.g. SNURK's graph sig [below], which can be posted anywhere that takes an image. Updated daily.

edit: @hardnews, have copied your post, near verbatim, to http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Widgets#Limitations. If you wish, you may edit registered, or anonymous. The Start Here FAQ index already points to this wiki page, with more tips on how to include the widget in web pages.

"woman"

Thank you. As newly elected 'Queen of Widgets' (1 vote) I accept gold bars, Krugerrands, or proposals for World Peace at the usual address.

Re: making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

OK, so my widget is getting somewhat out of date. The WCG web site says I have 17 days, 18 hours of total run time, yet my widget still stubbornly displays 13 days & 15 hours. So I'm looking for some kind of refresh interval. Looking at the HTML for the widget, I don't see an obvious one, as for the parameters I see "/getDynamicImage.do?memberName=MyNameHere&mnOn=true&stat=3&imageNum=3&rankOn=false&projectsOn=false&special=false" frameborder="0" name="di" scrolling="no" width="125px" height="176px".

Is one of those a hidden refresh interval, your highness? And if not, any idea how long it will take to update? I think ideally I'd have it refresh once an hour, but I dunno if that's too much of a burden on the WCG servers... I don't want to bring the whole project to it's knees for a silly refresh interval...
Thanks,
Jeff

p.s. I don't have access to Krugerrands at the moment, so I'm really hoping you take checks. And, um, don't cash the check for awhile, please. A really long while. And don't make any large purchases-- or even small ones really-- on the expected income.
:-)

Re: making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

I think the 'updatiness' is a function of there being something to update. The WCG stats seem to be updated daily, more than that could mean that the elves in the WCG servers would be running around too much. The widget on my desktop updated about every 24 hours.

But I'm only a humble network analyst. HTML, for me, is the Devil's Work. Why the widget is behind the server stats is mysterious indeed.

A Professeur de Stats will be along in a mo with some further insight.

Re: making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

Per help: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=widget the widget updates whenever the stats update, which for the team part is about 1.5 hours after the nightly update starting at 00:06 UTC time. My Grid updates every 12 hours.

Re: making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

Well, this gets even odder. (yes, actually even odder than the fact that I care about some detail so mundane) The widget on my blog-- http://jrox.blogspot.com-- is correct, yet the widget on my desktop is horridly out of date. Blog widget: "18 days, 14 hours of run time." Desktop widget: "13 days, 15 hours of run time." So the devilish fiend would appear to live on the Windows Vista side of things... Does that clue help any of my problem solvers?

Re: making the widget live on my Windows 7 desktop?

Not even going to try and understand. All depends on where the Windows Desktop Gadget is pointing. E.g. I got a plug-in for the web browser (not maintained but hacked enough to meet my needs) that lurks on data at http://boinc.netsoft-online.com/e107_plugins/boinc/get_user.php?cpid= where cpid= has mine suffixed and pulls Total credit and RAC hourly from the different projects I'm on. Then I can see in the status bar if things move, the FF web browser being my portal to pretty much anything I do. At any rate, when it says "data unavailable", it means the WCG BOINC server is not on line. Yesterday evening it was not for a while, and some members noticed.
