Just wondering if checking the box for "use GPU while computer is in use" in the preferences menu allows the computer to use the GPU as an additional number crunching device as well as the cpu? So for example, I have 8 cores running the "crunching". If I check the use GPU box, does it act as an additional core to do the number crunching for a total of 9 cores?

WCG does not yet have a GPU project, so no. I think some time next year (probably Q1) a GPU project for HCC will go to Beta. This will be an opt in project, so you will also have to select it. Then your GPU will be used here.

Cityguy On other projects where gpu's do work now, there are MANY other Boinc Projects out there, the answer is 'sorta kinda'. Gpu's have lots of 'stream processors' and each is like a mini cpu, so enabling a gpu card can be like adding 1000 or more mini processors, with the resulting associated performance jump. The problems with just doing that everywhere is that while the gpu is very fast it can only do one thing, not lots of things like a cpu can, so a whole new application has to be written just to take advantage of it. Then you have both Nvidia and AMD gpu's and each is totally different in how they work, so most project write a generic application that will work for both. All of this takes alot of time and energy and of course alot of Beta testing too! Gpu crunching is still in its infancy but has been around maybe 2 years or so, there are lots of exciting changes coming as more and more Boinc Projects write applications to use the gpu's. The additional 'problem' is Moore's Law, the one about computers doubling in capability every 18 months, does NOT apply ONLY to the cpu, it applies to the gpu too. So what they write today may not work as well in a year or so. WCG does have the resources to make this happen and it looks like it might happen in Q1 of 2012, that is exciting news!!! ![]() ![]() |

GREAT thread. To me is is very informative. I've got ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series adapters and look forward to more Beta work.

Yoro42, you could use that GPU at POEM now.
----------------------------------------Available for AMD/ATI OpenCL1.0 capable GPU's (4000series to present). Up and running for Win and Linux. For Win you need to have a recent Catalyst driver (11.11 and 11.12 are known to work). You also need Boinc 7.x (the Beta version). NVidia does not yet work there, and will be OpenCL1.1 (recent drivers will be required). [Edit 2 times, last edit by skgiven at Dec 28, 2011 4:10:00 PM] |

Just reading on the BOINC message boards that v7 is alpha, not beta. Be prepared to use additional configuration flags, check the machine constantly and report any issues to the BOINC devs promptly. Alpha software is not for production machines.

So, you would have better results there dedicating a core to the GPU. However, you would be taking that CPU core away from here too. YMMV ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Can you talk about how long they took, credits you got etc.? Or is all it all hush, hush right now? I signed up for Beta Units but have never actually gotten one. ![]() ![]() |
