AVG Free Blocking Some Programs

I am running the AVG Free Anti-Virus Malware and Spyware program.

Lately I have been receiving messages from the program saying that some of the downloaded programs from World Community Grid are suspected Mal/Spyware.

I have been placing them into the vault of the program until I receive confirmation that they are safe.

"Malware";"Unknown";"C:\PROGRAM FILES\BOINC\PROJECTS\WWW.WORLDCOMMUNITYGRID.ORG\WCG_HCMD2_MAXDO_6.40_WINDOWS_INTELX86";"N/A";"12/6/2011, 7:55:22 PM"
"Malware";"corrupted";"C:\PROGRAM FILES\BOINC\PROJECTS\WWW.WORLDCOMMUNITYGRID.ORG\WCG_HCMD2_MAXDO_GRAPHICS_6.40_WINDOWS_INTELX86";"N/A";"12/7/2011, 8:47:20 AM"

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Re: AVG Free Blocking Some Programs

All WCG programs are thoroughly vetted by IBM even before they are accepted for being prepared for the BOINC wrapper, that interfaces between the science application and BOINC and after 92 million results, see http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProject.do?projectShortName=hcmd2
we should be knowing it is OK.

We generally recommend to set a scan exception on the BOINC data dir area. It's already sandboxed, BOINC removing anything that is not in the file index in project files that is not also in the mirror index that WCG keeps of what's should be there, CRC/MD5 file checks and all inclusive.

So far, the false positive score on the AV programs has been 100%, i.e. they've always been wrong [it's usually a bad AV signature db update]. In short, it's save to move the file back out of the vault an set the exception.

This has happened to many of the AV programs over time...if you exempt the Boinc set of directories it will stop the false positive problem. Exempting ONLY the Boinc directories will still let a real virus be caught as it tries to infect other files in other directories.

Three words: Don't use AVG. Period.
