Re: Minimum RAM requirement

And I don't manage to paste a screen print in the thread to show the messages of BOINC...

Someone could help me ?
Etienne,
- choisis la vue avancée
- clique l'onglet Messages

Re: Minimum RAM requirement

Sorry if my statement was in err, I have done this on another project where the video card did not meet the minimum requirements to run the project, but i put a hard overclock on it, and used this trick to get work anyway. I assumed that this is because the anon platform bypasses the min requirements, but this could just be on video card, I've never tried for anything else.

And just a note: It doesn't require the project to give out source code, you can simply lift the regular app that is downloaded when you attach to the project, and point the xml file at that app, which is what i did in the above mentioned case.

Then *simply* make sure to lift a new version copy if one comes out, as there will be a new one without notice (but a post beta forum post). The output might not be identical i.e. declaration might turn invalid. That said, don't know, but suspect that the new results will aim to link up with the new version.

I assumed that this is because the anon platform bypasses the min requirements, but this could just be on video card, I've never tried for anything else.

Hmm, guess this was a project-specific, customized limit that looked on the reported MHz or something of the GPU, so an overclock could be enough to meet this limit. The CEP2-bandwidth-limit is another speed-limit it's easy to violate, so even if you're on dial-up it's possible to get CEP2-work if so desires. Also, since a tasks FLOPS-estimates or computers benchmark can be wrong, a computer completely out of work in a project will still get 1 task, even if computer based on the estimates has no hope of finishing by the deadline.

Other limits like memory-limit and disk-limit on the other hand is always enforced by scheduling-server, since sending work to a computer not meeting either of these requirements nearly always gives problems, either due to running-out of disk-space in case of disk-limit, or computer-performance is severely impacted due to running-out of memory. Both of these things often leads to the task erroring-out due to not enough disk-space or can't allocate enough memory.

You can think of the various limits in this way:
The 1st. group with bandwidth-speed-limit and run-time-estimate can be seen as the minimum speed-limit on a motorway. Now, even if you're driving something that maxes-out at 30 km/h or something, as long as you're not caught by the police nothing will normally happen to you.

The memory-limit and disk-limit on the other hand can be seen as either "max height" or "max weight"-limits. If you comes to a bridge there it says "max weight 2000 kg" and you're driving a 15000 kg truck, it's a bad idea to drive over the bridge. Similarly, if a parking-house or a tunnel or something says "max height 2.1 m" and you're driving a 3 m high van, it's a really bad idea to try driving here.

It's the same with computer, if a task needs 1 GB memory but your computer only has 512 MB memory, trying to run this task is a bad idea.

Hi everybody,
Bonjour M. Boullier

I finished 1 HCC Wu yesterday evening while I was surfing on the Internet, and I got no new WU. I hoped 1 GOFAM WU. May be this evening, so that I will post the message here.

Thank you all.

Re: Minimum RAM requirement

Who was it that said just run HCC or a less resource demanding project on it? I had two machines that did exactly that (download and then did not run...so guess what they are running now: a wonderful project -- HCC. I guess I do not understand the need to spend precious resources trying to shoehorn 25 cents worth of candy in a 10 cent sack.
