I am of the opinion that this is the real deal. However, my friend isn't convinced.
How sad. Anything I can do to help him see the truth? |

You could do a google search for articles in which IBM created the WCG and articles about BIONIC software namely the institutions which use it.
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/97577/..._computers?taxonomyId=065 is one such article. Also wikipedia has articles on the WCG. SETI@home uses the BIONIC software. |

Also, as IBM (International Business Machines - one of the biggest companies in the world that's been in business for over 100 years), is soley behind the venture, I very much doubt that they'd allow any kind of "hacker hotnet" to appear within a million miles of WCG...
----------------------------------------Edit: d from b..., it's BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), not BIONIC ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by gb009761 at Oct 26, 2011 6:20:42 PM] |

Similar to a spam zombie virus, it's a program that takes over a comp without the user's knowledge and attempts to attack various websites and computer networks. Hackers and spammers (often nowadays one and the same), use a network of virus infected computers to do their nastiness on the web making it harder for the authorities to track down the hackers and spammers.

Hello d from birmingham,
Sorry mental recall of the spelling of the grid program failed me. Well try to remember that it rhymes with Boing from now on. Did you ever see the Calvin & Hobbes cartoon collection titled "Scientific Progress Goes BOINK!" ? ![]() |

I do most of my WCG crunching off line from the internet, so that would not be much use for a botnet.
What's it doing with my 100% CPU usage? |

I am of the opinion that this is the real deal. However, my friend isn't convinced. How sad. Anything I can do to help him see the truth? Other than what has already been said probably not much...but you could show him the Boinc Project Androinc. It is now closed but it WAS designed to get you and I to hack a particular smartphone so it coud be 'jail breaked'. 'Jail Breaking' a smart phone gives you access to things the vendor has not enabled yet or normally charges you for. There is also the Boinc Project MooWrap that is trying to figure out the coding for different encryption levels. It is NOT about hacking as the phrase has been pre-determined, the idea is to prove it can be done. YES Boinc COULD be used for hacking, and it has been in the past, but the use is so limited it wouldn't intice most of us to use it that way. One thing that MAY convince your friend...the BIGGEST BOINC PROJECT BY FAR is Seti, the search for ET radio signals. If Boinc were all about 'bot nets' then ET is NOT the way to intice people! ![]() ![]() |
