Version Confusion

Hello
While poking around I found the following link:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Is the latest version for 64 bit windows really 6.12.34?
If you go to the download button on top of this screen it links you to 6.10.58. That version according to the link above is for MAC OSX.

Re: Version Confusion

WCG make their own Boinc version based on the Berkeley versions. The recommended version by WCG is 6.10.58. This is because WCG tested this version extensively.
Berkeley cater for many different projects. If you just crunch here stick with 6.10.58. I can't think of any single project that requires a higher version, but some people crunch several different projects and some more recent versions cater for these setups better, and some of the default settings for the WCG version are not recommended for other projects. Berkeleys latest version is 6.12.34 and its a good version. I still prefer the familiarity of using 6.10.60.

As SKGiven said the newer Boinc versions work better for things like crunching with the gpu, which is not currently supported at WCG. When using both a gpu and the cpu to crunch there can be scheduling conflicts as they finish their workunits in much different time frames, so if you crunch for the same project using both your gpu and your cpu, on the same pc, the fetch work schedule can be a mess. The newer versions are better at solving this mess, along with MANY other updates along the way. As SKGiven said though if you just crunch for WCG the tried and true supported version is just fine.

Re: Version Confusion

Last words:

1. WCG running the GPU with the 6.10.58 endorsed clients, both NVIDIA and ATI (so was the internal word), and the scientist too wrote they'd coded 2 separate apps for these.

2. No need for a 64 bit client. The 32 bit client on a 64 bit OS is perfectly able to handle 64 bit work requests. After all, it's the science apps doing the work, BOINC being the scheduler/manager.

3. 6.12.34 is *not* the recommended 6.12 client in my book. See the latest Start Here FAQ why not. 6.12.42 just out for testing, on Linux.

4. Mac OSX Lion has a little install issue, ironed out with the 6.12.34 client. I understand that running the 6.10 installer a second time overcomes that ''Lion" problem.

edit: point 3 is 6.12.34, of course :)
