There are an increasing number of smartphones on the market with CPU with dual cores and advanced GPU's. I think that WCG should launch an app for smartphones.

Thomas,
----------------------------------------If WCG *could*, it *should*, but there simply isn't anything that any researcher has offered up that could possibly fit into these devices without torching them....poof 750 USD iPhone. Opposed to crunching, there are now gadget/apps to be had that can be loaded onto smartphones to monitor the cruncher at home. Would that not be cool to show off to family, friends and colleagues [business relation may frown would you do it in their presence] and explain them how your office/home PC is progressing with computational science? --//-- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 8, 2011 3:36:09 PM] |

Thomas Klauset Aurdal .. though WCG does not have anything regarding phones, there has been discussion in these threads (quite a while ago) and elsewhere about getting BOINC to run on them. The biggest problem was heat and the second is quite simply processing power. The third problem was power because you would need to leave it plugged in. With current phone technology, I doubt you would see any CPU intensive project to benefit from such small resources. However, a non-CPU intensive project such as FreeHAL, wuprop, or Survveil possibly could. I know that more and more phones are wifi capable and don't need cell/phone service and as these devices are retired from use, they could still have BOINC use. Unfortunately, you would have to find someone with the time, skill, and interest to donate to a project that might find that useful. Right now, that market seems a bit small.
