X Window System error from boincmgr

Hi,

I'm new to the grid, and just installed the boinc client on my Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit system. When starting the boinc managed, the window looked quite strange and there were many X window related error messages on the console (Gdk-CRITICAL: ...).

After a while, it crashes with the following error message:

The program 'boincmgr' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
(Details: serial 4654 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line'
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I think this concerns only the managers as I have several wcg_c4cw_lmps_6 processes running.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Holken

Re: X Window System error from boincmgr

My first instinct would be too try running ubuntu without unity or compiz. login with classic desktop no effects see it does the same thing?

Hi holken, welcome to WCG

Can you check the display driver level and tell us the BOINC version. Did you get it from the Synaptic package manager / Ubuntu software center or from WCG or Berkeley (the .sh file).

Got Unity and Compiz running without issue, but you might want to log out and as per sunfolk's suggestion then select the user name with which to log in and at bottom of screen choose Classic, (No effects) Desktop then sign in. This activates the least load old Gnome interface. After try BOINCmgr again.

Indeed, the core daemon that controls the science apps running does not need the BOINC Manager GUI. Most all to manage BOINC can in fact be done via terminal and the boinccmd tool.

Re: X Window System error from boincmgr

Thanks for your replies.

I am running Gnome 2, but I did try logging in using the "Classic, no effects" option, but there was no difference. The window is visible for a couple of seconds (still looking strange) before crashing with the error message.

For display driver I'm using Nvidia 270.41.06 (as reported by the Nvidia X Server settings) and the boinc version is 6.10.58_i686. I downloaded it from the website (i.e. not through Synaptic/apt).

Thanks
/Holken

Hi,

Suggest you install from the Synaptic, whatever version they currently have (6.10.59 which has a minor screen-saver fix I think or 6.12.33). It will be a 64 bit version and will also integrate better with Ubuntu. Works well for me with NVidia 280.13 drivers, through Synaptic.

Hi Holken,

The version in the repositories is 6.10.59 so is more upto date than wcg version. Also if you use synaptic you can be sure all dependencies are satisfied. Maybe try that next?

EDIT: Yeah what sekerob said, *must type faster* ;-)

Re: X Window System error from boincmgr

Hi again,

That's great! The version from synaptic works perfectly it seems. Don't know why I didn't bother checking in synaptic first. Anyway, many thanks for helping me out, guys!

Best regards,
Holken
