Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

Would rather crunch for cures than prime numbers.
Totally agree. Would never count Pi/prime/hotpo/hashes/chess/Sudoku or similar meaningless projects. Not keen on searching for aliens either. If I had been I would probably have another zero to my credit total, but in reality the zero would be at the start. To me it's important to consider what I am investing in and overall credits is not really what it's about. People respect you for what you crunch for, and vice-verse.
Although MilkyWay does not top my list of projects, you might consider helping MW map the universe with your hi-end HD, if you are not already doing so. My HD5850 is there, for now...

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

I've got dual Nvidia 580's, but they're reserved for gaming. No crunching allowed.

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

What a waste! You could get 300,000 credits a day fining cures for CRC/HIV with that lot.
Did you know that you can have Boinc stop crunhcing when a program (game) runs?

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

This question of which graphics card is a big stumbling block for a lot of people.

We have no such stumbling block regarding CPU's. Anything reasonably modern will work, some better, some worse.

I am just a normal person, in love with the whole crunching process. But, when I buy a computer, I do not choose the graphics based upon BOINC or WCG. The GPU is part of a decision process regarding the whole machine and its cost.

So, I will be interested in GPU when the answer is not which one, but a simple "yes".

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

mitrichr, last I heard WCG wanted to go the OpenCL/OpenGL route, which would facilitate the inclusion of the greatest number of GPGPUs. However even this would not allow All systems with a GPU to work on any would be WCG GPU project.

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

skgiven-

That is not unreasonable. Things do not work right with every CPU either. I would just hope that the rules would be inclusive enough for most people with reasonably modern equipment.

Users should also keep in mind the fact that GPU work is not a great idea on laptops because of the heat load. BOINC even recommends I think just 60% for CPU usage, also because of heat. Even desktops must be really well ventilated and have good fans for crunching with GPU.

But, hey, any step in the right direction is a good step. A lot of people would like to see the GPU thing come to pass for WCG.

Re: What GPU's would you bring to the WCG table?

It use to be that GPU crunching on laptops was generally not recommended. However, modern (40nm) GPU's should be OK, so long as you use tools such as EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner to control the fan speed/temps.
The same was just as true for CPU's; many older CPU's ran too hot to be safe (hence the defaults here), but the more modern (or well built) laptops cope better.
With increasing use of 32nm CPU's and 40nm GPU's the immediate future of laptops looks solid for crunchers, and the longer term future (2012/13) with 22 to 28nm CPU/GPU systems will be even better wink
