@knreed - our Networking guys exempted the new IPs and the CEP2 IPs in the ASA and all seems to be well with the proxied labs on campus. Since we have a bunch (~300) machines behind a proxy, it's important that we know about IP changes when they happen so that these clients still get WUs/upload results. Are these changes disseminated via any other method than a forum post? I know we've had to make some changes over the years, but it's typically only after I notice the screensavers in proxied labs letting me know that the machines have no WUs to crunch (no running tasks).
----------------------------------------@cleanenergy - On another note: you should describe your experience in setting up Marist as a super-WCG-host on the web. This would definitely be interesting and instructional for other institutional participants. That sounds like a good idea. Should we be hosting this on our site, WCG's site, or both? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by marist_college at Sep 9, 2011 4:33:25 PM] |

That I know of, this was only announced via forum posts. Perhaps a targeted e-mail to major partners would be appropriate.

Dear marist_college,
I think if you are willing to go to the trouble of putting something together we should give it the biggest possible publicity. You could, e.g., host a webpage at Marist and our project homepage, the WCG homepage, and hopefully many other people would prominently point to it. Does that sound like a plan? This would be an awesome spearhead effort - it is always a struggle to convince the responsible people to sign up groups, departments, schools, companies, etc wholesale. You guys show that it's doable! Best wishes Your Harvard CEP team |

marist_college, I like your new silver badge!
Can I suggest the IP addresses, opt in requirement, and recommended settings and concerns be made more visible; Boinc Notices, top of project page. Please consider the fact that marist_college has barely made it into double figures for post count, and yet, is the greatest contributor. I think this has highlighted the need for projects to be a bit more proactive WRT contacting crunchers directly. Notices by email (phone even) has been suggested before. Had the logo below (and list of WCG projects) on my little site since I joined WCG. Several hundred hits. A college with a page or so should get several thousand every year. ![]() Help projects like: Drug Search for Leishmaniasis, Computing for Clean Water, The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2, Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2, Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2, Help Fight Childhood Cancer, Help Conquer Cancer, Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2, FightAIDS@Home Good luck, |

I think that what marist_college does is, to put it simply, awesome. Other large institutions should follow their example. Another one that comes to my mind is MrKermit (when in full-throttle mode).
P.S.: after 00:00GMT update, marist_college got a ruby CEP2 badge! I bet in one day it'll be sapphire. |

As I read this it occurs to me you may want to investigate Boinc Tasks to manage your machines. It could be an easy method for you see, from one location, any machines that are out of work, underperforming, or having other problems. Granted it would take some setup time with the number of machines you have but you might want to test it on a small scale and see if it is beneficial to you. I am currently ~ 1,200 miles from my server farm but I can manage it just as easily as if I were there using BoincTasks and some other software. My personal apology for the comments of some of our forum trolls. Alas, every forum has some and it is best just to ignore them. It is unfortunate they cannot crunch as quickly as they can post psychobabble. Thank you for your outstanding contributions to Distributed Computing and WCG. I wish other colleges would do likewise. Thanks! ![]() ![]() |

It then becomes a question of how many years will marist be able to contribute. |
