No CEP2 work units?

Hello everyone...we have sapphire badges for every WCG project except for CEP2. Based on the fact that our CEP2 stats seem to never increase, it appears that we're never getting CEP2 WUs.

Does anyone have an idea why and how to fix this? We have a ton of devices installed with varying HW specs, but the last 2 years are i5 or better w/ 4 GB RAM or better. We certainly have machines capable of running these WUs.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: No CEP2 work units?

Maybe it is a bandwidth limitation. The tests are not always accurate. In your device profile, have you tried setting the number of work units as "unlimited"? That removes the minimum bandwidth limitation also.
Otherwise, do you have enough disk space? CEP2 requires 2 GB free disk space, or it will not even download. You should check you disk settings, both in your online profile and in the BOINC Project Manager - Preferences, for each PC.

Re: No CEP2 work units?

Have you specifically opted in to the CEP2 project in your profiles? It is the only one that is not selected if you ask for all projects. Also, if you do opt in, the default is to receive only 1 WU at a time per machine; there is a separate pull-down box at the bottom of the device profile screen if you want to ask for more.

Re: No CEP2 work units?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Most machines have 10 GB disk space set for WCG's use w/ typically ~500 MB in use, so disk space shouldn't be an issue.

We are (and have been) opted in to this project since it began.

Bandwidth shouldn't be an issue...my machine is a Quad-Core Xeon w/ 24 GB RAM, 2 TB disk (10 GB for WCG/BOINC), and a 150 Mbps connection to I1 (shared between only 4 people). I never get CEP2 WUs.

I did tweak the device profile on the site to allow 2 CEP2 WUs at a time (was set to 1). The text indicated that anything above 1 would remove the bandwidth restriction too.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see if we start getting CEP2 WUs...

Re: No CEP2 work units?

marist_college, on your Results page, are any CEP2 WU's shown?, as, what may be worth checking, is the fact that (and I know this is probably unlikely but it's worth checking), as these WU's can quite often have very long intervals between checkpoints, is that they're not getting a chance to finish in time.

Also, on your BOINC messages tab, are there any messages relating to CEP2 - perhaps showing bandwidth/memory/no work available etc.?

Re: No CEP2 work units?

Hi marist_college.

We were wondering just a few days ago why you have "only" a bronze badge for CEP2. One of the things discussed was the heavier bandwidth requirements. And since I guess you have tens (or hundreds) of machines, this could be an issue. Be careful before proceeding.

Re: No CEP2 work units?

Thanks for the help everyone. One of my beasts (I have 2 machines w/ the specs I listed in the previous post) has 2 CEP2 WUs now. I think it was changing the device profile on the website to allow 2 CEP2 WUs (from the default of 1). I'll keep watching over the next few days. Hopefully we'll have a sapphire for CEP2 in a few days... wink

Re: No CEP2 work units?

Leave Applications in Memory is a recommended setting for the CEP2 project (LAIM).

Re: No CEP2 work units?

Dear marist_college,
this is indeed mysterious - there are plenty of workunits and we could definitely use your participation (you may know that CEP is somewhat of an underdog project due to its comparably high demand on hardware). We have a document with recommended project settings, but this is mostly to optimize an already working setup... Maybe the IBM team could chime in here?
Please keep in touch!
Best wishes,
Your Harvard CEP team
