I became interested in solid state cooling systems a few years ago.
----------------------------------------I was given a cooler/warmer that had a reversible cord that worked from an auto 12V cigarette lighter. Depending on how it was connected it would heat or cool the contents of "the cooler". It was large enough to hold a 6-pack. There are no fans. This intrigued me enough to look into it further. I found that there are Peltier solid state devices that are cheap but none that could take CPU temperatures and stay reasonably priced. In the future maybe the costs will come down while cooling capacity will become adequate to cool a CPU. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

3000 volts.. big deal.. how many watts is it... there are lots of things that require high voltage... its the amperage and wattage that matter
----------------------------------------heck there is this thing called a violet wand that i have seen used in physical therapy and such and it is 65,000 volts... Tesla coils (that some people are using for music effects and such are also of this voltage level. so 3000 volts is nothing. solid state is a nice way to go when you can. will wait a few years to see how well this all works out. working as fast as my computers can but my cat in her infinite wisdom turned off the cat heaters last night (she knows how to turn off my computers. ![]() |

Oil ignition transformers output 10KV.
----------------------------------------I used one to build a Jacobs Ladder while in high school. Unfortunately, I got close to one of the leads and had my brain reset. It was quite a memorable event--somewhat like being hit in the chest with a baseball bat. That was the beginning and end of my high voltage experiments. After that I was content to make gunpowder and other cool mixtures/compounds with my Gilbert Chemistry Set. My present policy is nothing over 50V. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

When i installed the 240G SSD as the "C" drive, with a clean install of W7 and programs, i left the old WD hard drive in place. So if (when) the SSD flames out, i just have to move 2 cables, and it's back to business. (Hoping the HDD hasn't frozen up in the mean time, of course). ![]() |

For the last 18 months I have been running my i7 with a 60GB Samsung 830 Series SSD in a Raid configuration with a 1TB HDD.
----------------------------------------The motherboard supports Intel Rapid Storage Technology and this is the recommended configuration for that feature. AHCI is not turned on, defrag is off, and Paging is done on the HDD only. It produces about 60 Gflops running WCG. If AHCI was turned on it would do even better. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

Correction, RAID uses AHCI and the BIOS says it is set to RAID/XHD.
----------------------------------------Paging was moved back to the SSD because the documentation says that it will improve performance. Native Command Queuing is active and TRIM is on. Intel Rapid Storage Technology provides the AHCI drivers. The Windows driver is not used and the drives are NOT hot swappable. The SSD is SATA3 and is the boot drive which makes booting quick. The SSD has been in use for about 18 months and has yet to show signs of wearing out. However, 60GB is barely enough to hold Windows and BOINC so I see an upgrade in the near future. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

because the documentation says ....
Wait... What? Where's that sense of adventure? The smoke! The flames! 60GB is barely enough to hold Windows and BOINC if you're using the SSD as cache for the HD, then aren't the pgms actually on the 1TB drive? oh, i get it - you need an excuse to 'upgrade' ! ![]() |

So my i7 laptop is setup with her as a 2nd user so that her day is not interrupted by a down PC. When her desktop died I built her a new one that by accident had an AMD FX-8350 8-core, 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD, and a 3TB backup HDD. Her stuff is all working and she only disturbs me if a warning message pops up. How great is that? ![]() ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by RCC_Survivor at Jul 7, 2013 8:48:43 PM] |
