What are the next CPUs coming out soon? I won't be able to afford them probably, but they should push the price of current cpus down right?
I hope they release a 12 core cpu with HT, that would be 24 tasks running at any time in just ONE box! And they should raise the chip speed to 4ghz because i'm scared of overclocking ! Did I tell you i'm excited? |

Here you go....
----------------------------------------http://www.slashgear.com/intel-ivy-bridge-roa...h-in-march-2012-30155647/ Should give you a good picture. Should drive older ones down but sometimes not enough. Am currently using westmere processors myself. I try to skip a generation so ivy Bridge will probably be my next build, depending on cost. Buy what you can afford. I run dual processor pc's to get as many cores as possible in one machine. Easier to maintain. Good luck on your selection.

Surprisingly, the price of older chips doesn't drop as much as it used to. I guess more people are waiting to purchase "old" hardware and this keeps the price stable for a while after the release of the next generation.
----------------------------------------I'm still right on the fence on getting yet another upgrade. If I do it will be a Phenom II x6, the sandybridge are still over $100 extra for similar science output. That P-III is getting harder to justify not upgrading all the time. I don't know if I can hold out for an 8 or more core chip. Edit: BTW, the rumor mill is suggesting that the Bulldozer architecture will start with an October release. I'd take this one with a whole handful of salt until a more firm announcement comes out. Edit 2: If I remember correctly, the Ivy Bridge will require triple channel DDR3. While this is more expensive, a dedicated cruncher is going to want that extra ram to support all the threads. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 [Edit 2 times, last edit by KWSN - A Shrubbery at Aug 23, 2011 2:46:11 AM] |

"The new Ivy Bridge processor is said to be much like the current-gen Sandy Bridge platform but on steroids. The 22-nanometer 3D tri-gate transistor manufacturing process promises a 37 percent jump in performance and a 50 percent reduction in power consumption."
Sounds AWESOME! For those that run heaps of boxes, these new cpus will save them heaps on power and be fast as, and they are just at 3.3ghz and STILL 37% faster, so imagine those cpus overclocked to 4.5ghz...the future looks good. |

Have to disagree with you on this one. X6=125 watts. i7-2600k=95 watts. The excess power cost to run the X6 will more than offset the price difference over the life of the CPU. The 2600k overclocks enough to far out perform an X6 and still use less power.

Considering I don't overclock and most of my electricity is hydro, the numbers don't add up for me. It takes a long time for .05/kwh to add up to that much.

.05 what? per KWh?

At stock my i7-2600 CPU actually uses around 65W when crunching at 100%, and my entire i7-2600K system uses about 120W, without an additional GPU (not needed with latest Mobo's) - now is a good time to upgrade, and as for AMD ................................................ October, which year? 'Surprisingly, the price of older chips doesn't drop as much as it used to'. Good, I want rid of my energy hogging i7-920 and 8400 systems. A single i7-2600 would do more work for about 1/3rd the electric (std around 14.8pence/KW, and the cost is much more in many parts of central Europe). |

I agree, the 2600k is a great system for people who have higher rates. For me, it's a third more for the hardware. I can do three AMD systems for the price of two Intels. That's 18 threads vs. 16. Factor in the slowdown from hyperthreading and you can see why it just doesn't make economic sense for me. My goal is to get the greatest amount of science done as I can.
