Re: Getting lag

Saul Luizaga,
did the reinstallation of windows bring anything or you are still seeing the same issue?
Which version of BOINC do you use? The one from WCG web page or one from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ ? I always use the second option because it has the newer version.

You say, that you have this problems since some new projects have been added to WCG. If you should not find a fix for this issue, just disable those projects in your profile (probably here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...iguration.do?name=Default )
and continue crunching on all the other WCG projects which were always ok. Some systems seem to not like one or another project for some strange reasons.

Re: Getting lag

Sorry for my late response, BTW my MoBo died because I tried to take out the cooler and the CPU came off sticked to it without raising uo the CPU socket lever, anyway this Mobo is better (Foxconn A7DA-S v3.0 (2 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR3 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN)). I have overclocked my CPU from 3.4 to 3.6Ghz I could do 3.8 but I need a better Power Supply, the cables overheat at 3.8; maxed my 2 ATI 4670s with the latest Cats 11.10 (with 11.11 preview 3) and is all OK.

@Coleslaw: I searched the site and I found only the PATA one, but anyway my 2 SATA hard drives work fine and both are the typical electromechanical ones. I didn't found

@skgiven: Only 3 cores is not a good solution, is a bad patch for a bad configuration IMO.

@steffen_moeller: My 2 HDDs don't have any heavy activity because of WCG, if the PC is OK WCG doesn't cause that, maybe is their security software, defragmentation utility or something else, maybe a virus, spyware or malicious rootkit.

I use Avast! Home & COMODO Firewall and don't have any extra HDD activity even when I have them active because I deactivate Avast! & COMODO Defense+ for better performance when I'm not introducing/viewing new information.

All projects run just fine in my PC nothing unusual at all, I found strange that you have any problems with any of them.

Sorry but I won't be doing Einstein@Home.

The problem I think it is BOINC related, not WCG related, when all BOINC processes ran on 'Low' priority everything was better, they should ran at least at 'Below Normal' priority to avoid this, I don't know why IBM had to make this change but it was for the worse for me.

Ummm...I think you missed that it is the same software for both SATA and PATA. And you find it the same way for both types. So, if you found the one for PATA, then you can use it because its the same piece of software.

Re: Getting lag

@SekeRob: if you read carefully what I meant is that IBM changed the BOINC, not the sciences processes, from low to normal. As I wrote not heavy activity on my HDDs at all. All 3 processes run on normal priority: boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe & boinctray.exe. my local IP 127.1.1.1 is completely open for all allowed programs including BOINC, COMODO Firewall reports nothing blocked on that port.

@krakatuk: As I wrote I didn't reincstalled Win7. I use the lates BOINC Client 10.12.34 (x64), it work good. As I also wrote is not project related anymore, I have narrowed dow to BOINC functioning, after those 3 processes went to normal priority lag started, coincidentally new projects were added, but after I set those processes to below normal everything responds well.

@Coleslaw: for the third time, there is nothing wrong with my drives I don't need that software.

Re: Getting lag

No, Saul, IBM/WCG did not change BOINC client priority either (as what I carefully read from your previous message you seem to see or think). They run at Normal priority, core client and BM. There is zero reason to change that because both use just minutes per day in doing their job. Lowering their priority would certainly impair the management operation that the client performs.

edit: If BOINC is installed as service, in windows you could specify if you wish to give general priority to foreground or background operations.

Re: Getting lag

To add:

Standard Berkeley compile of 6.12.33 runs boinc.exe service as Normal under windows. The BM runs normal too, and it should else you'd be see lag for sure while using it.

Looking in Linux, the boinc daemon (aka core client) runs same priority as the sciences, nice 19. The BM runs at normal, nice 0

Re: Getting lag

Saul,
I have just checked those 3 processes on my boxes. Everywhere they are running with normal priority (I have some older versions of BOINC installed as well).
They all together use not more than 1% of CPU time even on my old laptop. Such a process cannot lead to a lag even if it's running with highest possible prio.

But since lowering the prio for those processes helps you, I can only think of only one explanation for that:
These processes are managing science-processes. In case they are running with same (low) prio as science processes, they are not getting enough resources to be able to do their work in time. That leads to a little slowdown of the science-processes (sometimes they have to wait for the boinc.exe to response). Probably this slowdown makes the system a bit more responsible, even if it's strange...

You could try something: Leave those 3 processes in normal prio, then change your BOINC settings to use 99% of CPU time (instead of 100%).
If my idea is correct, it should help.

Please let us know if it helped...

Re: Getting lag

Saul, client 10.12.34 does not exist... either a typo or you've fetched yourself a "malwared" version . Only that could explain BOINC using allot of time or causing lag. The Tasks Manager would tell where the CPU time is going. 99% of total BOINC would go to the science apps.

WCG official Windows client is 6.10.58. Nothing above for Windows. If you do, then point finger at Berkeley for 6.12.34 (which is known to have at least 1 bug that can be circumvented by returning to 6.12.33 or the WCG recommended.

Re: Getting lag

Yes I mixed the BOINC version with latest Catalyst versions :-) I'm using the latest from BOINC 6.12.34 I updated recently as suggested by previous BOINC (a newer version than WCG one) and maybe is that bug that is causing the lag, but that was mostly on my previous MoBo this one has no problems, maybe ASUcks (ASUS) design was the problem. I can say I have no lag now but just in case I try to put all 3 BOINC processes 'below normal' when I remember to do so, BOINC doesn't get affected by this and yes boinc.exe only takes 8 secs so far, boincmgr.exe 5s and boinctray.exe 0s.

Thx a lot for the assist anyway.

BTW, The latest Cats is 11.10 official and driver fix: 11.11 preview 3.
