Hi, I have an EEE netbook running Win 7 starter. Want to keep Win OS on the machine. With msconfig I can load only system services but it won't allow the agent to run. What do I need to selectively turn on to get it to work?
Plan is to have the netbook run 24/7 and activate the agent for a few hours per day. It is powered by a 20w solar panel and a 7ah battery. So when it is idle I want it to use as little energy as possible. In the Bios I have turned off many of the hardware items not needed. Now, with sunny summer days, I can run 24/7 with the agent running from 9am to 6pm. But I shorter / cloudy days won't produce enough power. Thanks for your suggestions! |

Is BOINC already running on the machine, installed as service [Protected Application Execution] or under user?
BOINC can be configured to pause when you need the CPU time, wholly or partially [suspend processing when CPU use is over X percent] and even set to pause when specific user applications are loaded. BOINC can be set to compute per schedule, or in a way that a target maximum temperature is never exceeded [TTHROTTLE utility for windows] Beyond that, there are manuals on the intertube that give lists of what can be shutdown without breaking things. Step by step switch something off and observe if things keep functioning. An example is the Windows 7 file indexing. Switch that off, but for sure exclude the BOINC data directory from the area. Generally these EEE systems are pretty good and conservation energy and shutting down non-essential OS functions... but if they take a few minutes a day as can be seen in the Task Manager Process view [adding the CPU time column], you can figure out which you don't need and are not affecting system stability. Great you're doing this on solar power. Looked at such a system over here and it would set us back about 1000 USD equivalent for a good stationary, a portable for about 500. Sun non-stop from 6-20 hours this time of the year, many doing well on mere daylight these days. Let us know --//-- |

Thanks for the input. I will try shutting WIN services down one at a time. The solar setup is for my emergency ham radio gear and earthquake kit. Right now it looks like I can run the agent during daylight hours without any battery usage. During darkness I plan on having unit idle. The EEE extended life internal battery runs around 15 hours on idle with current settings.
