Re: New Set of Beta WU's - General System Test, All Sciences

Thanks again for the explanation and suggestion. I am unsure what you mean by 'full communications cycle'. In the situation I was referring to, I omitted to say that between making the online profile changes and receiving the 'using separate prefs for school' message, I received countless 'No work available for the applications you have selected' messages indicating that the new profile had not yet been adopted.

I appreciate what you say about micro-managing, so the next time I see this happening, I will use your reply to guide me towards making a better strategy for myself.

Thanks again for replying with your suggestions.

EDIT:

...and thanks for appending the 'communications cycle' clarification to your post wink

Anyone else finished a CEP2 Beta without the usual large upload file? The 4 files were uploaded in merely 10 seconds.

There are 5 parts, and on reviewing my event/msg log see on the last 3 5, that _4 was not uploaded, not even started for the 1/2 and number 3 took 4 minutes to upload _4. You may have caused me to hear a penny drop as why the CEP2 validations are on hold. Got 133 hours worth for 15 tasks in PV with complete quorum.

Edit. Corr., all 7 CEP2 Betas of last run had no _4... mistook a part _4 of a regular production finishing nearly simultaneous that took 4 minutes, which is pretty fast. Have anyway found that Linux seems to upload much faster to Harvard than W7, from here that is.

Yes - I finally realized that I hadn't enabled the cep2 beta validator. Sorry for that.

Re: New Set of Beta WU's - General System Test, All Sciences

And with that, I will get Beta Bronze Badge on the evening update!

I suppose it is too much to hope for the Betas continuing long enough to make headway towards Silver ...

Re: New Set of Beta WU's - General System Test, All Sciences

Yeah, my old PV's have now cleared. The only PV's I still have are tasks for which the wingmen have not yet returned.

On changing profiles.
If you change to Beta tasks only, and there are none, after a while Boinc will backoff for 24h. Even if you change the profile online to run all tasks, Boinc will sit and wait 24h unless you do a manual update.
For this reason it's wise to only man manage local systems.
From an earlier post, I fully agree that a 24h backoff is too long. The WCG has probably never been down for 24h. How much effort is it for a computer to try to connect to the server every 4h at most? It's not like it will eat up all your bandwidth. Could the WCG version of Boinc be configured to have a more sensible setting of say 4h max?

Re: New Set of Beta WU's - General System Test, All Sciences

The 24 hr backoff was probably legacy holdover from the days of dial-up modems and to prevent extra phone charges. It does not make any sense for on-all-the-time DSL, et al.
