Due to the heat, I have had to shut down at least 4 of my systems for a total of 6 threads/cores. My systems were cool, but with all the extra draw from my AC, my old wiring just can't handle it.
----------------------------------------With the record temps here in the Midwest (USA), how many other people are having to cut back and by how much? Post your cutbacks here and when you plan on them to come back up. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I haven't cut back as yet, but we have a lot of heat left. I'll have to wait and see what the AC bill runs in the middle of summer.

Good topic! This is my first summer as an obsessive cruncher, and I'm interested to see what folks have found to work best for controlling heat and power draw in the summer.
----------------------------------------So far we've had only a couple of brief stretches of really hot weather, so I cut back for a few days, then resumed full tilt. However, as AnnieKenes (who lives only about 100 miles from me) said, we have a lot of heat yet to come this summer. On another thread, people suggested that it's more effective to reduce the number of cores used by BOINC, rather than to reduce the per cent of CPU usage, since the latter is implemented as constant switching between full core usage and 0 core usage. That makes sense to me, but I haven't personally made any comparisons. ![]() |

Well..my electric company took notice of my habits and sent me a nice little letter/break down on my usage. They said out of the 100 neighboring households, I was using 90% more power then the average household. What is sad, is that this house uses about 50% of the electricity of other houses I owned in the same town and they never gave me a break down. I run more PC's now then ever on less power but since my neighbors use less...this caught their eye. Now I have a list of helpful energy saving tips to cut back. I wanted to call them and ask them to put CEP2 on there...LOL
----------------------------------------Edit1: kateiacy the major drawback to me on limiting cores is when BETA units finally become available. If you are a badge hunter, you will see the importance of increasing your chances at picking these up. I also find that a box fan blowing through what many crunchers call naked systems (no case or no side panel on the case) to work really well. This also makes it a lot easier to clean. I do plan on starting these systems back up, but I gotta wait until I am not pulling so much electricity through these walls or I come up with the money to upgrade the old wiring. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Jun 13, 2011 2:26:58 AM] |

I'm consolidating my 5 (2 are laptops) old devices down to 3 updated component desktop devices by replacing old hardware with better energy efficient components (motherboard, DIMM, PwrSup, hard drive, and additional CPU cores.
Just counting CPU cores and TDP watts: 5 old - 8 cores, 265 watts 3 new - 10 cores, 255 watts Just need to get better CPU coolers than the noisy stock AMD ones and I'll be all set. |

Do keep the Dustbunnies out, particular those crunching in Texas and adjacent states. Gave me laptop a thorough workover and temps went from 80C to 68-70C (daytime dependent).
Till then, TThrottle will slow BOINC down also on the Desktop when it gets too hot, which is running in Windows 7 now, since that handles CEP2 very well. Crunch On, with whatever you can afford :D --//-- |

Gave me laptop a thorough workover and temps went from 80C to 68-70C (daytime dependent). Same here, only not really 'thorough'. Just used the hoover to clean out my laptop's air intake filters/slits and now the processor temperature has dropped from nearly 80°C to around 60. A nice side effect is that the fan is now only whispering instead of roaring. Summer has only started here and temperatures will most probably still rise significantly but I'm quite hopeful that I can go through it without having to decrease crunching power. Living in the temperate climate at around 54 deg latitude does indeed have some advantages ![]() ![]() |

Well with all this rain in the forecast, I am able to start all but one of the computers back up.

yep got some rain too, but figure I'll still run em at 75%. Should switch that to 6 out of 8 cores...
----------------------------------------2 I7 (16 cores ht) down to 12 HT. Can't wait for the newer 32 NM or maybe I'll wait for the 22nm next year..... ![]() |

Schucks - we're freezing. Outside temperatures even came down to less than 20 deg C.
