Reading this thread in full, fatguy confirmed to have 6.10.58 installed!
----------------------------------------Just wonder if his admin rights were changed [company computer it seems], but then he'd not be able to install as service/protected application execution or manually needs to add the user to the BOINC user group. Also question is, if the "Allow All Users" were chosen, else only admin can connect. To get that going, again an uninstall and reinstall is required to get to the installer options. --//--

Thanks everyone for the kind responses! Saddly, I've installed/uninstalled this program probably 25 times, it absolutely, unequivically refuses to "connect to client."
I don't know if this means anything, but when installing the older version, for some reason my "control panel" doesn't acknowledge the programs existence on the hard drive. I can see the directory with explorer, but I have to go back to the download site on the WCG to get it to uninstall. I mention this only as a last ditch effort that it might tip somebody off as to what is happening with this confounding mass of silly-con I have before me. Thanks for reading.Fatguy ![]() |

You have not told us how you install, exactly. I''ve run some tests some days ago actually sequentially uninstalling 5 copies Ihad active on the machine of different versions, and it did not really matter at all how I did it when finally installing 6.10.58 again. If the user is authorized to the boinc_group, then connection has to work.
----------------------------------------So lets visit Task Manager, click on Service tab, and find the BOINC entry. Does it say there it's being executed? Then launch services.msc from the cmd line in the start menu. Again find BOINC. Does it say "started" and "automatic". Right click the BOINC entry and hit properties. Who's got the master rights? Then under depencies does it show Remote Procedure Call (RPC)? Then, as earlier mentioned in this thread, did you try boinccmd to see the boinc core client status? For now, then let us know your findings. --//-- PS, in your firewall port 31416 has to be open over IP 127.0.0.1 aska localhost as else hope in heck, no connection between boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 1, 2011 3:00:39 PM] |

Firstly, thanks for your time and patience.
I install 6.10.58 as follows: Accept terms? Yes. Next. Directory, advanced, select run screensaver and allow all users. Ready? Next: Install. Complete? Check launch and finish. Normal Boinc loads with a pop-up soon after word - "Communicating with Boinc Client, please wait........" which I do.Now according to taskbar Boinc is running, BUT according to services.msc Boinc does NOT show up in the population list. I assume that's not good. I did open the port for both incoming and outgoing, I am the administrator of this infernal machine. Thanks much!! Fatguy |

after you select "advanced", deselect screen saver, select allow all users, and run as service (protected app), should get you running, IIRC requires reboot

Well, sounds like you're installing as user and not as admin.
----------------------------------------Here's a screenshot stepping how to install and have it run even if no-one is logged in.. specifically, tick the "Protected Application Execution" box: ![]() For the rest, refer to previous posts in this thread on how/with what you can check what boinc is doing. Just curious, have you booted any time through all this? --//-- edit: fredski nutshelled it perfectly :D [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 1, 2011 7:40:36 PM] |

Completely Off Topic: Sek, your post from May 28th came from your old account, the one with non-capitalized "r" and 20K posts

I Know... Look in the Start Here forum and you'll probably discover a new or edited FAQ such as http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31335 and then forgot to do the cloak switch ;O)
