Re: UK

I looked at SETI@home some 10 years ago but didn't follow through (was a payment required to register/download the software?)

I found WCG from a World Aids Day post in a Demonoid forum and having known several people who died from the disease followed the link. I like the idea of my computer contributing whilst idle, Messing around with the mass of data available on WCG has given me the chance to hone my excel skills and is an added interest.

Re: UK

Like many users, I had used BOINC software for SETI@home. Started to crunch WCG as the result of a team challenge by Userfriendly. The aims and ethos of WCG seems closer to my own feelings. Since then have lost a younger cousin, father & mother in-law and 4 close friends (younger than me) to the big C.

So I will carry on crunching, hopefully with more machines in due course (pensions allowing)

Re: UK

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far smile

Thankyou Fosking and at Thargor, I'm sorry for your losses sad

I'm constantly on the look out for cheap systems that will add to my current setup or allow me to retire old systems that are passed their best, but it does annoy me that my place of work (can't say who, their policy doesn't allow it), won't join in and nor will any of my remaining family (or my Wife's family for that matter), or any of our friends sad

The systems my place of work has could double my CPU output over night angry and if the Whole organization got involved, they would double the entire effort of everyone on WCG put together (for CPU, though not GPU) crying

Re: UK

I've always been tempted to try and build my own Beowulf-system, at some point, but space is an issue at the moment. Once I move from this flat, into something a little bigger (and not attached to so many other properties), then I may consider starting that project up...

This is a very tidy example, although I'm not sure if I'd go with cases for each machine, or whether to go with a custom-framework like this somewhat messier (but older) example.

Re: UK

Evening all.

Crunching here is to try and help give some really nasty diseases a real big steel toe-capped boot in the rear end.

Can't remember how but I stumbled across a website which was crunching RC64 at the time so joined up and then followed onto OGR crunching, back in the days of my Amiga. So started having a look at what other DC projects were out there, went to UD when I got a decent enough PC to help in cancer research. When that started to wind down, I moved to D2oL with a couple of other guys I knew across the net. When that was coming to an end and after a bit more DC research I installed BOINC and started here.

Will raise a glass of Dark Side from Bath Ales to my fellow crunchers while blasting Back In Black through the computer speakers.

Re: UK

In 2005 when I fist joined I was in my second year at university and I was learning about cellular biology so when I came across the WCG and the Human Proteome Folding project I felt like doing work to help what I was learning about, which was cool. That continued until the first year of my PhD at which point I stopped, don't remember why. That was followed by 5.5 year break during which time I got my PhD in clinical genetics and became a published researcher in cancer epigenetics. I'm not sure what made me think about this project again but it may have been me buying a new computer and wanting to put it to use while I was asleep or out. And I'm pleased I did as now there are now a number of projects aimed at cancer I can help with. The more I can do I hope the better everyone will be smile

Re: UK

Most of my family are no longer alive (only my Brother, 2 Sisters and my Dad remain), and those that have died (bar 1), have died from Cancer and a good friend from Aids, also, my wife is a Cancer Survivor and it makes me Angry, very very angry and I want Payback..

Likewise - several close relatives to C. Crunch on. More knowledge about these diseases brings all of us closer to a cure.
Cheers
