Ubuntu Natty and crunching?

Is anyone else trying out Ubuntu Natty? Do you see any change in crunching speed compared to Lucid or Maverick? I just put Natty on my AMD Fusion netbook yesterday evening and let it crunch overnight. It seems to be running C4CW at the same speed as before, but HCC considerably faster. I'll report specific results after a few more WUs have run so the data becomes more reliable.

I don't like the Unity desktop. Here's how to get the old Gnome desktop. As you're about to log in, click your user name. This activates some buttons at the bottom of the screen. One is the session button. Clickit and choose "Ubuntu Classic (no effects)." Then enter your password as usual. By the way, choosing the "no effects" version keeps compiz from using CPU cycles.

I had read that Natty (a) drew more power than previous Ubuntu releases and (b) ran faster than previous Ubuntu releases. I'm curious as to what crunchers are experiencing on both fronts.

Re: Ubuntu Natty and crunching?

1. More powwah use, yes

2. Much slower to boot experience (Phoronix benchmark 2.6.24 through 2.6.39), shows 2.6.32 of 10.04 to be in the top tier.

3. Poor Firefox performance 4.01 and not getting better. App hangs in memory when exited.

4. Loss of about 1.5% in crunch efficiency, 0.5-1% even if the GDM service has been killed. Sometimes like for Evolution, 8 copies of the same app keep running... suspect zombie-isms as with Firefox. Kernel 3.6.38.9 was added to repository this weekend for a bunch a quick fixes.

5. See my Confez-ions thread for more comments... few.

6. Needed to take a liking to Unity (WIP), but now it's no different than using Synapse to launch an app... Alt-F2 and type few letter of application i.e. Unity-Dash is superfluous, but for a handy recent apps use list. It's really agitating to have to go to top of screen to get to any app menu and it being hidden when mouse is not there, so aiming for the right menu item is a crime.

But, The 802.11N Wifi has been up without needing intervention for over 3 days and the BM scrollbar did get replaced by the overlay scrollbar, to save some pixels on my 14" display.

PS, Compiz Unity add-in gives a couple of useful tweaks if you like candy and gloss (and loose more cycles), hence to continued killing of the GUI after use.

I hadn't realized there were problems with Firefox because I immediately installed the Chromium browser; have not had any problems with it so far, but I haven't done much.

Thanks for all the info! I will check your "Linux adapt" thread, and will be doing lots of comparative testing on my machine over the next few days.

Re: Ubuntu Natty and crunching?

Not really formal testing, but after killing the indexing service... not found looked for a way to specifically exclude the /var/lib/boinc-client data-dir yet, the CEP2 efficiencies per BOINCTasks moved into the 96+ percentage and 3 concurrent C4CW, not the lightest stuff, running at 99.5%, so nearly back to optimal. Running 4 concurrent HCMD2 or HCC used to do 99.9% under 10.10 (2.6.35), with the disk access tweaks **, so I'll get to run those for a bit when time is right. Some 6.42 did in the 1.06-1.10 hours range... very little variability, so it will be interesting to see if some minutes can be shaved off after the Natty initiation dust has settled.

I've now removed those tweaks since the 2.6.38 kernel has them now build in... that was doubling up and likely causing some contention in Disk IO.

ttyl

PS, I did the upgrade via the Update Manager, and all including it downloaded 1.9 GB before actually live running the upgrades. All in all it took over 6 hours to complete. Notably, with OpenGL gloss running, not observed any screen freezes at all as used to occur with 10.04 and 10.10. Still finding many more Unity tweaks to apply (there's now one to show System Use/Temps/Fanspeeds in the top panel)... the good ones I'll share in the Confez-ions thread :D

edit: A "positive" review of Natty, for those that like to give Linux a first try: http://www.itworld.com/operating-systems/1619...nuxa-desktop-eve?page=0,0

Does this actually allow you to control fan speed, i.e. is it a real tweaking utility, or does it just display the speed?

Re: Ubuntu Natty and crunching?

More for those who like to take their first Linux plunge... a very detailed, and long, 4 page instruction how to get going with all the apps needed: The Perfect Desktop - Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Nar...e Ubuntu Classic Desktop)

Skip Adobe Reader though. There are a few good alternates in Red Hat Synaptic Package Manager aka RPM, to include an excellent and fast in-line pdf viewer for Firefox, that also allows saving a copy to disk.

PS, still running 99.5% efficient after last tweaks, 'cept CEP2. :(

Re: Ubuntu Natty and crunching?

Not a good reference, but using the WCGDAWS tool of piroque filtered out:

Natty: 28 results for 1.11 average, truncating the highest/lowest, it is 1.09 hours (there was an oddball long result there)

The nasty bit is, can still boot into the 2.6.35 kernel of Maverick, but all the rest of the environment is still Natty, so expect no meaningful comparison if I'd run a test now.

From test at end of April when on W7-64, same machine, the tool captured a dozen that ran an average of 1.34, removing high/low, 1.33, so at least Linux on v 6.42 of HCC appears to be about 20% faster, for this setup.
