WUs keep getting "Detached" - why?

For the third time, I've just had all my cached work units suddenly go to status 'Detached';

(the first batch have all dropped off now..)

What is causing this to happen?
It's very frustrating, especially as two of the wus in progress at the time of 'detachment' were close to finishing, but all the processing time is lost. It's certainly not me making the request from boinc manager to detach, but seems to happen just 13 minutes after receiving a new wu.

I've searched to see if anyone else has had this problem, but I can't find anything similar that has occurred recently.

This is my machine, which is fairly new to wcg;
Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU P6100 @ 2.00GHz [Family 6 Model 37 Stepping 5]
Processor: 256.00 KB cache
OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Home Premium x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00)
Memory: 2.87 GB physical, 5.73 GB virtual
Disk: 282.55 GB total, 233.88 GB free

Are you using BAM?
Did you try a project reset, system restart?
Any date/time changes?

- AntiVirus program kicking in?

These are the messages from around that time, from receiving the last wu, to then sending back 5 'completed' (i.e. detached) tasks;

Only that line in red looks slightly odd. I only have one cep2 wu at a time, and this is the replacement for the detached one just lost. So there was about an hour between being 'detached' and my machine then communicating and finding out about it.

By BAM, do you mean the BOINC Manager? So yes, I do use this, but I didn't do a project reset or system restart.
With the second batch, I had noticed on my Results Status page on the website that they had been lost, while my machine was still happily processing them, and therefore initiated an update myself so as not to waste any more processing time. So it doesn't seem to be my machine deciding to detach.

You do mention the AntiVirus program, which is Norton Internet Security 2011 and came with the machine. I'm not all that pleased with it, as it seems to be causing other problems. I won't renew it when the trial period expires in 20 days. Proabably use webroot or AVG instead. But could it really be the problem?!?

Yes it could. IMHO Norton is beyond awful and I would never use it under any circumstances. I could tell you horror stories of machines I've had to clean up with that junk on it but it would take pages. I would also avoid webroot if it were me. Too much of a resource hog for my liking. Microsoft Security Essentials and the built in Win7 firewall are all I use and they work extremely well together.

Re: WUs keep getting "Detached" - why?

GB033533,

You can test if it was BAM causing the "detach". Somewhere on the Advanced View menus is an option "Synchronize with BOINCstats BAM!" The message aka event log will record the activity with BAM which looks like this.

28/04/2011 10:43:29 | | Fetching configuration file from http://bam.boincstats.com/get_project_config.php
28/04/2011 10:43:31 | | Contacting account manager at http://bam.boincstats.com/
28/04/2011 10:43:33 | | Account manager: BAM! User-ID: 1234
28/04/2011 10:43:33 | | Account manager: BAM! Host-ID: 654321
28/04/2011 10:43:33 | | Account manager: Number of BAM! connections for this host: 171
28/04/2011 10:43:33 | | Account manager contact succeeded

There's a box in your BOINCstats-BAM profile http://boincstats.com/bam/projects.php

"Attach new host by default?"

that needs selecting for WCG which makes sure that WCG gets attached to all new devices. Then BAM checks if WCG is already attached and leaves the association alone.

The stdoutdae.txt file contains all the BOINC message history. It's found in the BOINC data dir which path is printed in the message log. The sequence will tell if this at all happened and by whom it was initiated. BOINC bug or network fluke or BAM.

I have found Norton to be very intrusive and even uninstalling it may not completely solve your problem. If you feel comfortable I highly recommend a program called RegSeeker to remove any remnants of Norton from your registry after uninstalling it.

As in past, the same same advise needs to be re-passed: Exclude the BOINC data directory from AV scanning. That's the place from where the science apps are launched and executed.

(And I think to recollect that WCG, - speak IBM - once before had an intervention with Norton over an issue... Avast remains my favorite Windows AV and on Linux it's CLAMAV)
