Has there been any thought given to badge recognition beyond the sapphire level? With hyperthreading on multi-core machines, it is possible to go beyond the sapphire badge within a reasonable amount of time.
Perhaps somehow adding a "year" counter within the sapphire badge? Thus when you exceed for example 3 years on a project, a "3 years" or just a "3" would appear within the sapphire badge. Just a suggestion, but I know that would help keep me motivated to go beyond 2 years! :) |

martianmoons...there has been a lot of discussions on this topic. It would be best to just do a search in the forums because the topic tends to spill over into other topics. In short though, it has been discussed that at some point in the future new badges will appear, but to what degree and when isn't a high priority right now for the developers.

Also, note that some projects with multiple phases are already using numbers on the badge for a different purpose - the phase number associated with that badge.

Suggest the next color, purple, for 5 years accomplished. Just a thought.

I would like to see new badges for at least 5 and 10 years, but I would settle for a new project. It would be nice to have a new goal.

Maybe it was the cost of precious metals and stones [rendering] that shied WCG away ;>)

Well, 4, 8, and 16 years would be the natural next levels (= double the prior badge's contribution). Next one after that would be 32 years, although I wonder how many "natural person" grade crunchers (as in "crunchers other than college/commercial system operators") have actually managed to run a project to 32 years.
----------------------------------------There is also the option of switching from the currently square shaped badges to say, hex shapes. If we would now start the existing color scheme *again* (bronze hex = 4 years), we have an instant solution covering contributions up to 128 years. If you do the hex shape by essentially "cutting off" the appropriate sections from the colored back ground (i.e., you let the skeeter legs or the "2" stick out over the "rim" for the hexagon), you don't even need to do a lot of thinking about making the project logo "fit". Add an Octagon for the next level and it gets you to 8000 years. May I propose to honor crunchers with contributions exceeding 16000 years for an individual project (i.e., the hypothetically next badge) with a virtual personalized "plaque" instead ... ![]() |

While I generally agree that any such additions would go down very well, I'm not going to go over old ground again; don't see the point - crunching is not democratic.
Instead I would like to highlight that I am still looking to reach Blue for 2 existing projects; with the difficult to accommodate CEP2 and the difficult to get DDDT2 task varieties. Although I have lost all hope for a return of DDDT and CEP, as both have long since been super-seeded by secondary projects, I'm still holding out some hope for the return of IADS. Some badge hunters will also be happy to see the return of HFCC - not too far off now. Then there is the potential new projects to consider and the illusive Betas. If you are not happy about the lack of badges, or their orientation, just make your own and add them to your sig - many people are doing this in a variety of imaginative ways. Finally, if you just can't handle having a full suite of badges and no badge goals, change your orientation to points, or diversify and do some crunching for one of the other 20 or so active Boinc projects. |

This ground has been covered before, indeed. While I can in no way compete with the power crunchers in (future) badge levels, I can be proud on my full set on the left.
I do what I can with my available processors, and to me, this is what I'm proud of. Not the level compared with others, but the level achieved with what I can contribute. This doesn't take away that in the 2-4-8-16-32-and-so-on I would have a 16 now and wouldn't mind to show that one here. ![]() |
