Hello everyone,
I have a proposition, which is technically really easy. I would be happy, if there could be an information about Dotsch Linux in every Newsletter of Worldcommunitygrid. It could be quite short. For example, the last sentence in WCGs newsletter could just be: P.S. Did you know? There is a special Operating system called Dotsch Linux allowing BOINC to work even faster. Why not try and download it here.(Link). You can boot it from CD and leave your original operating system just as it is. The Dotsch CD image can be found her (Link). Burn this ISO data on a CD, make your BIOS boot from CD, insert the CD and that is it. To use your old operating system again, you just have to switch your BIOS to boot from harddisk again. Dotsch is ideal for those who leave their PC on just to calculate for Worldcommunitygrid when they are out of their home." Greetings and..... crunch on. Kafejka |

This is an interesting idea, but...
Most crunchers are not interested in changing their operating system because their goal is not to improve how much they can crunch for for WCG. Very few are willing to dedicate computers solely for the purpose of helping WCG and nothing else. |

Very few are willing to dedicate computers solely for the purpose of helping WCG and nothing else. Lots of people maintain computers solely for the purpose of helping WCG projects and other Boinc projects - hundreds for sure, probably thousands. Dotsch is one of the faster Linux platforms, and Linux tends to be faster than Windows for most Boinc projects (not all, and performance changes with new apps from time to time). |

I posted about it in his forum and hadn't received an answer as of the last time I checked. Will look again this evening. EDIT: I just checked his website. No reply to my 2/14 post.

Hello,
It seems to me as if an amateur created Dotsch, so it may be hard for him to update it for the newest platform. But the fact that it does not work on the P67 platform is not necessarily an obstacle to making Dotsch more known to our community, is it? Many people have older PCs. But maybe just lets wait and see. Have a good day. Kafejka |

Hello, But the fact that it does not work on the P67 platform is not necessarily an obstacle to making Dotsch more known to our community, is it? I was mearly stating that it doesn't work on the P67 platform. It's worked on everything else I've tried up 'till now including X58 and I think it's ideal for a "set and forget" Linux cruncher for the novice Linux user. He ususally responds to questions posted on his forum so I was hoping he could update it to keep up with the newer technology.

Is Dotsch the "Linux of the week"? Out of curiosity, I checked this list of lots and lots of linux flavors, and Dotsch is not listed. I would be cautious about changing to that particular one.

Yes, it was specifically assembled and comes with BOINC build in at the smallest of footprint, for easiest install, easy being relative since it failed me on 3 attempts trying to get it to boot from a USB drive, but probably will work straight out if attempted to put on a dual/triple boot HD partition. Live CD I'd have my reservation about... would it loose the data at each restart?
There are other ''darn small' Linuxes around such are Tiny Core Linux 3.0 which has a GUI of just 10MB. But for reality, though likeable the proposition, don't think WCG would put an endorsement in a newsletter unless they've tested it themselves... and that requires ''salaried/scheduled'' time. Reference has been in place on the Start Here FAQ index for longer though. The place I missed it was the Berkeley Distro page, or add-ons page http://boinc.berkeley.edu/addons.php. --//-- |

Is Dotsch the "Linux of the week"? Out of curiosity, I checked this list of lots and lots of linux flavors, and Dotsch is not listed. I would be cautious about changing to that particular one. I've been using it for over a year and I'll reiterate what I said earlier. It works extremely well for Linux "set and forget" crunchers. Yes, it was specifically assembled and comes with BOINC build in at the smallest of footprint, for easiest install, easy being relative since it failed me on 3 attempts trying to get it to boot from a USB drive. Sounds like EBCAK to me. I'd be willing to help you try again if you'd like. The only way you'll get it to work is with the tools on the Dotsch live CD. Unetbootin or other programs like it will not work. I have it running on 4 usb drives. There are just certain projects you shouldn't try to run on them.

Will take you up on that when the time is right... presently my dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 runs most tasks at 99.95 to 99.95% efficiency. Only CEP2 works at a "paltry" 95-97.5%... if I leave the system alone, which is like 23 hours in the day.
thanks in advance. PS, I think I posted about the potential fix of this somewhere on the WCG forums, but could not get it to work and then Lucid Lynx came on offer :D |
