Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

What is the security software make and were there any updates just prior to the problem starting.

There was the signing key change, so is something being mangled? Maybe clear all BOINC exceptions in the AV/Firewall, and then let them pop up an alert and reconfirm them as exception... also, a regular, set an general exception from scanning what in the BOINC data dir.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

I use the Zonelabs free firewall which hasn't changed in some time.

I manually declared three URLs as Trusted Zones last night, just in case, but it didn't make any difference.

I use Avira Anti-Virus which updates its definitions daily. I have tried temporarily disabling it but that didn't make any difference either.

I will try uninstalling the AV, and possibly try a different variety later on today.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

On a slightly different note, I am still getting a Windows error that BOINCSCR has crashed every time I try and start BOINCMGR.

Sometimes the manager interface opens and stays running and on other occasions, like now, it doesn't.

I'm just going to reboot again.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

On the computer that you are having troubles with, can you download this file via your browser:

https://grid.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/download/c5/cep2.qcaux_v2.zip

And time how long it takes?

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

For reference of this 67.7Mb Zipped file:

Over https: Beginning timestamp 16:29, Ending timestamp 16:32
Over http: Start 16:34, End 16:38

http was slightly slower. The browser download sidebar in latter case read out a mean speed of 373KBps

No firewall than that which is in the Router, Avast file scanning took place at completion of downloads.

edit: There was word that the key line of focus is on:

08/03/2011 11:31:52 [http_debug] [ID#1] Info: Operation too slow. Less than 10 bytes/sec transfered the last 300 seconds

10 bytes/sec, when mine blazes at 373KBps and for a non-compressible zip at that?

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

I wasn't willing to wait for the whole file to download since it would have taken too long.

I tried both HTTP and HTTPS versions via IE8 and Firefox.

HTTPS through either browser was reporting around 1Kb/sec while HTTP through Firefox reported about 4Kb/sec.

HTTP through IE8 downloaded the whole file in a second but this was only 37Kb, ie a broken file. I then re-entered the HTTP URL and after choosing the location to save the file to, I waited for the download to start. And waited. And waited...

I guess that means the issue of downloads is separate to the problem of the broken client that I now have as well.

Aaarrgghh!

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

When downloading, files go into a temp folder, which the browsers having set limits for. If not cleaned out recently, now is the time. Do use the OS temp file cleaner so to avoid deleting critical files that might be needed later such as installer files for BOINC.

Let us know.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

I'm not sure which Temp folder you are referring to, since IE, Firefox and the Windows OS each have their own, but I have cleared the Firefox one and given IE and the OS new folders.

This has made no significant difference.

I have just tried again using IE to access the HTTPS version and got rejected with the following error message:-

"Unable to download cep2.qcaux_v2.zip from grid.worldcommunitygrid.org.

The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response"

As I have previously mentioned, my access to WCG pages is intermittent between poor or non-existent.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Just noticed back to normal download speed(around 360) again.
Great, hope that is also the case for Floyd1 and others.
looking at messages happened about 21.15.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Eureka!

I decided to ditch the ZoneAlarm firewall and replace it (and the Avira AV) with the Comodo Internet Security suite (which is free :-)).

My agent has been happy to run from startup without crashing and then when I checked the Transfers tab, the remaining file was coming down at about 360Kbs. It has now slowed to around 200Kbs, but I can live with that.

Maybe it was a dodgy installation of Zonealarm, or maybe it was that Zonealarm doesn't do 64-bit very well. Who knows?
