Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

For those who want to verify if WCG/IBM network is up rather than testing google and if WCG has a new endorsed client, code-audited and all, add these lines to the cc_config.xml in-between the <options> lines and restart client:

<options>
<client_version_check_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.ph...ent_version_check_url>
<client_download_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.php</client_download_url>
<network_test_url>http://www.ibm.com/</network_test_url>
</options>

aendgraend,

Glad you found the culprit. Proxy/Firewall/AV suite updates are a major source of sudden networking issues with WCG, where WCG is the only one that does parts over https (secure), in fact CEP2 uploads are all https.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Ok so this has now been going on since march 03.
Just getting worse again since 1700 hours of the seventh.
Really do not want to start changing code in Boinc would rather those far more savvy than myself try it first.will have a go ,if it is the very last resort.
Are the techs going to bother to look into this issue that has been going on for 5 days?
If not ,may I please have an explanation from them why my Boinc messages ,that have always been on target for the last 5 years of crunching are now proving to be always wrong when they concernWCG, that their site is fine it must be mine and others hardware/software problems that are causing issues.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

TylerChris,

Think last time you said "So this Is where we part company, Thanks
Bye
", which is not adding any to progressing the matter... we're trying to help.

As aendgraend did by adding the extra log flags, he found his specific issue. You can do too as logs presented by you kind of tell absolutely nothing new, since they are default, highest level. asia's logs also passed interesting information to which the techs were alerted. Now, it's up to you to find out if your more detailed logs offer more/less/nothing. Then we can dig in further.

SekeRob
As you know from that post and others it was stated that enough was enough for one day and would try again the following day which duly happened.
I realize your valuable help right across these forums and have always thanked you for your assistance.
My post was directed at the techs who have offered no assistance in this matter what so ever.
maybe it is second nature to yourself and others to play with the boinc code but i thought it was just my job to download,crunch and return.Something I am very happy to do ,but that is proving impossible here right now.
Ok if it helps will try to play with the code.
But firstHow?
Do I just copy the code skgiven kindly wrote go to programs open boinc and paste??
Chris.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Create a cc_config.xml file in your ProgramData\Boinc directory (Vista and W7) using Notepad:

Open C:\ProgramData\BOINC, right click and create a new text document (call it cc_config.txt). Open it and paste the following into it. Save As (All file types) and change the name to cc_config.xml. Restart Boinc, wait a few seconds and then do an WCG update from projects and post up everything in the Messages.

<cc_config>
<options>
<client_version_check_url>Http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.php?xml=1</client_version_check_url>
<client_download_url>Http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.php</client_download_url>
<network_test_url>Http://www.ibm.com/</network_test_url>
</options>
<log_flags>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
<proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

PS. Using capital H to avoid link issues (replace with lowercase h in cc_config.xml file).

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

TylerChris,

Yup, those in-between the <options> and <log_flag> lines as posted by skgiven are the ones needed. Inserted those into any preexisting cc_config.xml as there might already be, then save making sure the file does not accidentally end up with a txt extension and restart the client. The place to look is printed at top of the message log and would read like.

Tue 08 Mar 2011 04:15:57 PM CET Data directory: /var/lib/boinc-client

(this is a Linux sample).

Editing the file is best done with Notepad as that would not likely add any hidden code, which BOINC does not like.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

ttyl

edit: see skgiven also pitched in. The paths are not always identical, so plz visit the message log to find the right place (sometimes a hidden path, which than needs to be typed out in file explorer).

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Thanks both
Understandably nervous about doing this.
So two more questions please;
Was under the impression when right clicking on the mouse ,that the information was automatically stored on note pad so all I have to do is paste?
Do not have a proxy is it still safe to copy and insert the lot.
(have not forgotten to lower case the H)
Thanks in advance

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

You may straight select from post any area of interest and do a Ctrl-C, then in Notepad, Ctrl-V. All text in the lines of cc_config.xml need to be in lower-case. There's no html code hidden in the WCG forum posts and any forum markup is lost in the copy process.

PS, there's really zero to be nervous about. If there are errors in the file, the message log will tell which lines are offending.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

I'm now getting new tasks and have no outstanding uploads. I think this was either an ISP (DNS/routing) or server issue, but now that its working again I can't look into the problem any further.

Re: Help! WU Downloads failing

Maybe the 'silent' repair man. My alert post has not been read yet, but bounce offs and partial upload fails are doubtlessly generating reports. But, good you're getting to work again and able to report.

I've got a shortcut on me desktops to send a boot instruction to the router. Often just restarting the PC network bits don't kick things sufficiently.
