shock Were are they? +700% spike in WCG Registration

In Watson's Wake, IBM World Community Grid Registration Skyrockets 700%
$500,000 in IBM Jeopardy! Challenge prize money to fund global research that benefits humanity

ARMONK, N.Y. - 18 Feb 2011: Watson wasn't the only computer system that won this week when it competed successfully against two human champions on the Jeopardy! game show.

The other computing system is called World Community Grid, a virtual supercomputer that helps scientists solve humanitarian challenges by tapping the unused computing power of personal computers around the world. Scientists who use World Community Grid are not only set to receive $500,000 in prize money -- but are already earning unprecedented support worldwide: The day after the tournament's conclusion, World Community Grid saw a 700% spike in the number of people who normally volunteer their computers' spare power for the effort.

World Community Grid, an initiative of the IBM International Foundation, has created the equivalent of one of the world's largest virtual supercomputers designed to tackle projects that benefit humanity, such as new treatments for HIV/AIDS, cancer research, and affordable water purification. World Community Grid works by pooling the unused power of 1.7 million personal computers from 535,000 volunteers in more than 80 countries. It then makes this computational power available for scientists who might not otherwise be able to afford the high speed computing they require for timely research.

This is the press release I received from IBM and also through the WCG grid newsletter I received per e-mail mentions +700%. I am not a mathematician but this means sevenfold or x7.
I feverishly looked at the total number of registered members, or registered hosts, but I do not see this at all.
I understand that you can overstate a little for marketing purposes, but here it seems things are blatantly incorrect. Maybe WCG Admin can explain what +700% means.

I followed the Watson Jeopardy TV game and I agree that IBM's Watson was really a fantastic performance. A small new step towards a future intelligent machine ?

I'll venture a guess: It may be a sevenfold increase in the number of "new registrations per day" or a similar metric, rather than in the total number of volunteers.

Re: Were are they? +700% spike in WCG Registration

Is it confession time or a coming out on: "I am not a mathematician but..." ;P.

Yes, the daily registrations of new members increased... which is one thing... seeing these still contributing 1 month later is though a realer metric. From Feb 17, we have 2199 new members that crunched 1 or more results. The active/active, those that kept going for the whole week increased by 1215 representing about 1857 devices, but that's the take I have from scraped data in recent weeks.

Active devices in my book only count after 31 days because there are some real big ''reimagers'' around that do that by the thousands on 1 day. Often one sees an absurd spike like not so long ago about 12,000 new devices in a few days, but then 30 days + most dropping off again, so my charts eliminate these (some curves that have no label, just for the intimi)

"Retention" is the word and WCG continues to be way way way above the BOINC world average. How some of the strategies work... not going to tell since it's a competitive world, even in DC. (not Washington)

So, was the mailing "blatantly incorrect"... think those are your words.

Statistics are a curious beast - as, which ever way you "interpret" them, they can say a different thing, depending on what you say/don't say...
