I.B.M's "Watson" on Jeopardy tonight was AWESOME

I was very impressed. "Watson" performed quite well taking into account having to understand language and respond to it.

My "Hat goes off" to all of the great "thinkers" at I.B.M.

Well, done I.B.M.

I agree! Amazing machine they put together; hardware and software working together so well.

I would love to own that machine to crunch for WCG!

I watched an hour long Nova on watson earlier.
They started inputing answers to questions during practice games.
It learned what the category was looking for, 4 answers and it started
getting them right. Blew me away

Re: I.B.M's "Watson" on Jeopardy tonight was AWESOME

I couldn't find much info about how Watson "interacts" in the game-playing environment. All I could find was that it is hardwired to the buzzer and of course the speech "output" (as well as the dynamic avatar). What is the input to the system? Does it have specialized inputs telling it the current scores, buzzer status, game status, and clue or does it only have speech recognition as its sole input?

Watson sent me an email saying he was going to donate half his winnings to WCG.

I wonder if Watson is also going to donate all his spare cycles between questions to WCG?

Go WATSON!

Cheers coffee

I thought this show was very well done. Tonight I hope to see more "Watson" and less "Alex". wink
I have a friend who's 89 year old mother is a real Jeopardy fan. At first she refused to believe there was not a "person behind the curtain". smile Now she is rooting for "the humans". biggrin

On the NOVA show, they described the input as a text message sent when the question is revealed.

I don't remember them describing anything about a strategy engine based on score or segment of the game.

I loved this. I too watched the Nova special on it. You can tell the other contestants are bothered due to the quick response. I do have one question though that I will look into. The text is entered into Watson....but how fast? Is the phrase entered entirely at once or word by word? What I am asking is does Watson finish "reading" the input before the contestants finish reading it themselves? I am a huge IBM fanatic by the way, thats all my machines are.

I wonder if the time that the text is sent to Watson is handicapped/delayed to allow the humans time to read/hear the question? thinking

This is exciting in so many ways. I can't imagine a more clever way to bring an advance in science and technology to the attention of the general public than through a show like Jeopardy. And the gentle voice and cute avatar are nice touches.

I would guess it's sent when the question is revealed. The contestants don't have to wait for Alex to finish reading before they can start thinking for the answer.
