Restart computer : you lost a part of calcul

I don't understand while, when I shutdown BOINC to stop my computer, the next day I haven't the same progression.

For exemple, yesterday, for 1 task I had 65% avancement and more time 4h30 and today, for the same task, I have 55% avancement and more time 6h35.

BOINC does not write continuously to disk, but uses the concept of checkpointing, see the FAQ page on the topic. Some projects checkpoint very frequently, others may have no checkpoint for hours because there would be too much data to save. So when restarting, you start at the last checkpoint.

But indeed, it would be good to have the option to force checkpointing at shutdown, regardless what the file size would be.

Martin

ok, thank you.

I think too that it will be good to force checkpointing at shutdown because I know that I had lost many hours for calculation

But don't expect this to happen. I guess the WU you got was a Clean Energy Project 2 WU - the project with the longest times between 2 checkpoints within WCG. If you want to avoid wasting processor time, you might want to check the status of the WU(s) - click on properties and compare CPU time to last checkpoint - the difference will be the wasted time if you shut down.

Martin

It sounds like you are talking about CEP2 work units. Other projects checkpoint more often and you don't loose that much of your progress. So if these wu's are giving you a hard time, then consider moving to other projects.

Re: Restart computer : you lost a part of calcul

On my computers that are capable of "hibernating," if I do that instead of shutting them down, I don't seem to lose the calculations since the last checkpoint.

Of course, that isn't an option when the operating system has done updates and a restart is required.
