Re: How can I use GPU?

In my very humble opinion, the whole scheme of things with GPU is just a mess.

First, this topic belongs at BOINC, not here. Fortunately, there are knowledgeable and considerate people tending this forum who will help.

Beyond that, the whole GPU thing is just too complex. With CPU, it is just yes or nor, and of course mostly yes. I guess maybe an original Pentium or 386 is a no, but I crunched with an ATOM 270 for a while, along with my Core 2 Duo machines and my i5 and i7 models. My colleague still crunches I believe with a PentiumIV, along with his more modern machines.

GPU should not be brand dependent. If I buy a computer, I am not going to pick a video card based on one or two BOINC projects. Crunching is just one of my activities. Clearly, for those who build machines for the specific purpose of crunching, picking a card for crunching with GPU is paramount.

GPU would probably take off if it were just a yes/no decision and any reasonably aged graphics processor from any manufacturer would work. Just think of the many many people and machines that would let in, and how much faster there would be results. Then, the only negative would be heat.

I agree completely.
I also think the point system is out of whack and some of the GPU projects are giving way too many points making a the point system into a joke.

Re: How can I use GPU?

I agree with the previous statements.
Additionally I think that the credit system does make sense only within one project, since the differences are much too big between projects. I am aware that it was not the initial meaning of the credit system. But it is pure (and devastating) reality. sad
The credit system is like the monetary system: you can have confidence in it as long as all players play honestly according to the same rules. As soon as one of them is depreciating is currency / granted credits, the system is useless.
It is interesting to observe that, even if it is no money to earn, players in the boinc world (i.e. projects) do make the same mistake than governments respectively states with their own currency. For achieving this reproduction of this "bad world", we need to put in place a "credits & badges exchange" (on the model of a usual stock exchange) in order to allow speculators to "buy" and "sale" badges and credits to less courageous crunchers. By the way, it would be interesting to observe which projects would be considered as reliable long term value and which not ! laughing
Cheers,
Yves
